The aroma is sweet with notes of prunes and over ripe fruit, and gooseberries, as well as hints of the alcohol. The flavor is very sweet with strong over ripe fruit notes, as well as wood, and alcohol, leading to a dry spicy end. omhper (12299), Stockholm, Sweden
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Nov 23, 2004 Bottled. Dark amber. Grapefruity cookie malt aroma. Rich and warming with soft mouthfeel. The vast hoppiness is hidden and balanced by the richness of the malt. Salty, very bitter finish. argo0 (6994), Washington DC, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Mar 5, 2003 Medium tan head atop a cloudy red-brown body. Aroma is barley wine sweet/hoppy, but also malty -- caramel and some whiskey elements sneaking through. Taste begins sweet, toffee, caramel, and date, then adds some floral hoppiness to the malty flavors, before finishing with a faint alcohol burn. Leans more toward an English-style barley wine, but there's definitely some American influence as well. hopdog (5614), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 23, 2005 Updated: Oct 1, 2005Here it is, my 1,400th rating on RateBeer. Bottle acquired in a trade with jjpm74 (thanks!). Poured a darker and hazy amber/mahogany color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, oranges, wood, and toffee, Tastes of caramel (lighter than the aroma), plums, and a bit fruity. Light alcohol burn in the finish. Rastacouere (5564), Montréal, Quebec, Canada
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Nov 20, 2004 Reddish orange robe. Shy off-white head. Huge condensed malt aroma. Intense fruitiness: mango, orange is overshadowed by rich smoked maple. This is a perfect example of Marris Otter’s potency. I can’t believe this is above 12%. Good grassy hops kick too. Extremely tasty, somehow liquorous thickish palate, low carbonation, sensuous maple syrup flavors make it seem very sweet, but this malt is beautiful and can lead you to forgive anything. Now that’s a killer, everything I want in a barley wine, too bad those beers are so hard to find. hopscotch (5537), Vero Beach, Florida, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Sep 16, 2003 This beer rocks!
Murky, copper-colored ale. Sandy head with decent lacing.
Rich malty aroma with lots of caramel and dark fruit. Hints of prune, raisins, alcohol and dates. Also, lesser notes of brown sugar and fruitcake... just a smidgen of sourmash.
Deep, rich caramel flavor. So well balanced for a barleywine.
Full-bodied with an alcoholic mouthfeel and lively carbonation. Long, dry, astringent finish.
MaltHead Heaven!
I can’t wait for the 2003 Storm!

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 5, 2005 Sampled at the 2005 EBF: Pours a hazy ruby copper with very little head. Aroma is a light blend of candy-like strawberries and toffee-like caramel malt. Rich, butterscotch malty sweet body has a nice aged complexity and light fruit flavor. Nicely balanced and hides its alcohol very well. A well-aged barleywine. Hildigöltur (5109), København, Denmark
