Commercial Description:
The '03 adds a new twist to the annual limited edition beer that we brew. The past three versions ('00, '01 and '02) all used ale yeast strains in their creation. This year, a lager yeast provides the next unique flavor in this series of strong beers. With this new yeast, we, again, selected an original combination of ingredients to round out the never-to-be-used-again recipe. Hints of roasted malt are balanced with the mildly floral bitterness of '03's three hops to produce our next one of a kind brew. In addition, the nearly full pound of malt that has been used to make each bottle of '03 is the key to it's complexity and tremendous strength. It is extremely limited, extremely strong and extremely original, because as we like to say around here: "It's All About Extremes!"

Bottle, thanks to puzzl. Muddy brown / red pour. Aroma is spicy from alcohol and somewhat sweet from broken-down malt. Flavor is fruity from malt / somewhat sweet and syrupy. Tasted better than it smelled.

Thanks to alldaydrinker for this beer. Poured at the 1/28 Houston tasting. Murkey, dirty pour with no head. Very still beer. Nice Storm logo in the head if you swirl the glass. Rich hoppy nose with lots of caramel and sugary molasses. Lots of heat on this beer. Milk chocolate and rich caramel in the taste...along with sugary sweetness. The viscous outhfeel is much more like a barleywine than a doppelbock. Thanks alldaydrinker.

2003 Version - 750 ml bottle shared by Zinister, 6th bottle sampled at the 1/28 Houston tasting. Pour is cloudy bronze with cheddar cheese orange highlights [TM]. Only a few dirty white bubbles cling to the edge of the glass. Aroma of deep caramel sweetness, raisins, a bit of oxidation and heat. Taste starts with the sweet molasses, dried fruit, raisin, then gives way to a surprisingly thin finish. Some lingering oxidation, heat and syrup sweetness. I was surprised at how much heat this still had on it. Thanks for sharing this rare beer Mike.

Via trade with Cryotek. Pours a cloudy brown with no head. Aroma is mostly caramel, dark fruit, earth. Hints of caramel, dark fruits, boozy, aged wood, old malt, little hop. Finishes very strong and rich. Aged a little longer might turn it into soy sauce taste. Perfect time for sampling.

This was quite a treat. Hellomynameis brought in a vertical of Newport Storm 03 through 06 to the RBSG ’07 Grand Tasting and finally cracked these open around midnight. The 2003 Vintage pours a cloudy brownish amber brew with a soft fast dissolving light tan head. Aroma of sweet fruit, molasses, a touch of vanilla and seasoned tobacco. Taste is a little salty (soy sauce-ish), with flavors of molasses and raisins. Texture is thick and chewy (full bodied) with a light toasted malt aftertaste. High alcohol created a very warm sensation. A very, very sweet dopplebock!

My notes read like nothing more than keywords. "fruity, sweet, barleywine like, malty, english, strong."
