Commercial Description:
The '03 adds a new twist to the annual limited edition beer that we brew. The past three versions ('00, '01 and '02) all used ale yeast strains in their creation. This year, a lager yeast provides the next unique flavor in this series of strong beers. With this new yeast, we, again, selected an original combination of ingredients to round out the never-to-be-used-again recipe. Hints of roasted malt are balanced with the mildly floral bitterness of '03's three hops to produce our next one of a kind brew. In addition, the nearly full pound of malt that has been used to make each bottle of '03 is the key to it's complexity and tremendous strength. It is extremely limited, extremely strong and extremely original, because as we like to say around here: "It's All About Extremes!"

Unique and extreme, very nice with multi-course dinner. Dark thick syrup. Vey malty and barley. Alcohol kicks in. Very quaffable. Bittersweet chocolate, maple syrup, cocoa, stout, mollasses, sweet almost cloying but popular. Thanks for bringing back Vaino.

Pours brown with a thin tan head. My first impression when I put my nose up to this one was holy crap...alcohol X50. The alcohol aroma almost overwhelmed me, but once it subsided a bit, some fruity smells emerged followed by the smell of soda bread. Tastes of raisins and nuts with a string alcohol aftertaste. I was hoping for a bit more out of this one goven how amazing the 02 and 01 were.

Big sweet, malty, caramel, estery fruity aroma. I had to force a head out of this one, which wdiminished quite quickly. Deep mahogany hue. Big juicy malts, maple, fruity esters again, slightly vinous, alcohol burn. Mostly one dimensional, but the malts are nice and there. Maybe if they dropped it down a little as far as the alcohol is concerned and threw in some more hops this would be great.

Sampled at the 2005 EBF: Dark earthy brown with a thin light tan head. Rich sweet caramel malty aroma with mild hop balance and a faint lager yeast profile. Nice complexity in the sweet malty body mild light hints of tartness before a dry earthy finish that hides the alcohol. Nicely balanced and well-aged, an enjoyable dopplebock.

First I gotta thank ClarkVV for this one! One thing that I wished I had a way to rate is the appearance of the bottle - the cobalt blue is stunning especially in contrast to the red & yellow design on the label. The beer pours a dark brown and almost looks like a cold cup of strong coffee. No head on the pour. Aroma is fruity like prunes and slightly alcoholic. As stated by many others, it flavor has a port like quality to it. It think when high alcohol is mixed with a thick fruity malt, the port type of flavor comes up frequently in many beers. Mouth feel is slightly oily. Alcohol dries out the finish.

Bottle.Dark clear brown. No head. Nose: dark fruits, pipe tobacco and alcohol. Taste: port wine, plums, raisons and coffee. Unlike many barleywines , this one tastes stronger than it is.

Boozy, woody aroma. Opaque brown with tan head that recedes to ring and partial cover. Lightly acetic flavour, slightly roasty and somewhat alcoholic. Medium body is a bit chalky. Bottle enjoyed with DYCSoccer17, MartinT, muzzlehatch, Omhper and Rastacouere.

Bottled. Mahogany colour, no head. Port aroma. Very malty, but somehow streamlined. Alcohol is there to add a woody vinous character. The sweetness is relatively balanced, and there is a balsamic soy sauce like Hürlimann/Triple Bock feeling to it. Short, roasty finish. Interesting and very good.
