IrishBoy (2685), Bakersfield, California, USA Feb 25, 2008 Blue bomber from Alldaydrinker; Nose is berries, yeast, toffee, brown sugar, and some barleywine-like aged odors; clear red- amber with a very small off-white head, the bottle gave a little poof of gas when opened; flavor is dark fruit, brown sugar, mild sweetness, and alcohol warmth; finish is alcohol with a little sweetness. Tastes like a cross between a very good barleywine and an excellent European Strong Lager! puzzl (2579), New York, New York, USA Feb 15, 2008 Bottle at a tasting provided by jjpm. Fruity, belgian yeast aroma, saison-like, but, you know, not very good. A very odd taste, sweet, but this really weird tingling, infected thing that leaves a bad feeling on the tongue. Good aroma, shitty brew. golubj (1275), Sunnyvale, California, USA Feb 2, 2008 Bottle, thanks to jjpm. Orange pour. Aroma is lightyly oxidized malt, some pilsner malt, but a little weak overall. Flavor is syrupy, slightly spicy from the alcohol, and sweet. In the flavor, there are no remnants of the pilsner aroma. Ibrew2or3 (2714), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Dec 5, 2007 Big thanks to matta for sharing this vintage ale. Pours hazy copper with weak off white head. The aroma is very barleywine like with figs and prunes mixed with a load of caramel candy, toffee, brown sugar and a hint of honey. There is a good sense of alcohol too but certainly in line with a brew carrying this high of an ABV. The taste begins very barleywine like as the nose had with lots of yummy caramel candy laced with dates, figs and prunes. The next note is muted spicy and floral hops mixed with booze, wood, sugar and toffee. Wow. Very interesting. A pleasant mixture for sure. Toward the finish the flavor dwindles down to caramel candy, some dark fruity ester, booze and fur tree. The caramel lingers forever. Quake1028 (633), Tampa, Florida, USA Nov 28, 2007 Bottle generously shared by matta, and a pretty nice surprise to find at the tasting. Thanks again, Matt. Body looks like very dark orange juice splashed with red or ruby red grapefruit juice. Almost no head, really just some bubbles and a layer of foam. Aroma is pretty huge, full of fusel alcohol, caramel, toffee candy, some slight Diacetyl, tropical fruit, candied sugars and plums. Smells a lot like a big Barley Wine. I dig it. Flavor is just as good, big on the sweetness and adding a huge sense of honey to everything the aroma held. I really don’t get a sense of the hops, maybe they have mellowed over the years, I can’t say. The alcohol is not as noticeable in the flavor as it is on the nose, but still gives a slight burn at the end of the swallow. Medium bodied, low carbonation. Slightly sticky palate. Very lengthy, very sweet fruity finish. I don’t know what this beer was fresh, but with 3+ years aging on it, it’s really, really good. I really liked this one, and think it’s pretty seriously underrated. kp (8400), Woodstock, Georgia, USA Sep 1, 2007 Date: 07/20/2005
