JCB (1713), Durham, North Carolina, USA Oct 28, 2009 Bottle from alldaydrinker - thanks, Jeff! Man, I sat on this one too long, alas. Deep ruby pour which is - save one or two courageous bubbles - entirely flat. Soft fig and plum notes in the nose along with the faded malt profile of an over-the-hill barleywine. Mouthfeel is decent enough for the age, but it tastes pretty damn oxidized. Still some old ale flavors kicking around, but it’s certainly well past its prime. TomDecapolis (3130), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 26, 2009 Pours a deep amber/brown/ruby with a smaller bubbly off white head. Aroma reminded me of an aged barleywine. Cardboard, dark fruits, toffee, wood and vanilla. Flavor of the same with caramel, nuts, dark fruits, oak, bourbon and vanilla. holdenn (1432), Chicago, Illinois, USA Mar 25, 2009 750ml bottle thanks to growler. Pours a brown red with a white ring of a head. Nose of raisins, brown sugar, and an aged dirty aroma that indicates this may be past its prime. Chocolate, raisins, earthy, dark fruit flavors that are sadly surrounded by dirty oxidized malts. A little oxidation can be good, but this is too much at this point. drewbeerme (2224), Chicago, Illinois, USA Feb 23, 2009 750ml. thanks to holdenn for sharing. pours reddish brown with off whtie head. nose of caramel, port, musty balsamic. flavors of port, dried red fruit, musty cardboard. med body. this is just way past its prime. dmac (1419), Toms River, New Jersey, USA Feb 22, 2009 Bottle from pineypower. Well I had a bad feeling about this one once I saw it because this particular bottle seemed to be underfilled and lots of open space means lots more air exposure. Sure enough this one was bad, Im talking drain pour bad. Totally flat and lifeless and tasted like wet cardboard. Next please. pantanap (1323), Chicago, Illinois, USA Feb 21, 2009 750ml bottle from holdenn. thanks matt.... pours a dark caramel brown with a thin off-white head....extremely papery caramel malt phenols with quite a boozy backbone to it. toasty but very assertive.....flavors of less sweetened caramel and dark fruit. soft carbonation almost too low. def more tolerable than the aroma. bikesandbeers (468), Los Angeles, California, USA Feb 6, 2009 740 ml purcahsed by WeeHeavySd in RI. ruby-brown pour with a small head. aroma is cady sweet with a bit of grassyness creeping im. flavor is smooth with herbaly notes and hints of candi and fruit. finishes stragenly sharp. Very strange brew. shigadeyo (2210), Harrison, Ohio, USA Nov 26, 2008 2005 Vintage ~ Rating #1500
11/26/2008: Newport Storm ’05 pours a greyish-brown color and has a very low level of carbonation at this point. The vineous aroma is loaded with tart cherries (think New Glarus Belgian Red or New Glarus Unplugged Enigma) along with some sweet, caramelized/sugary malt. The flavor is malty and toward the sweeter side of the spectrum at first. There is also some oxidation present in the caramel/toffee maltiness along with red wine, prune, and a light cherry flavor. It finishes with a rich chocolate flavor with hints of berry/cherry accompanied by a nice, warming alcohol sensation. This beer has a medium-full body, a good heavy mouthfeel, and is quite smooth. Overall I think that this beer has aged well and is still quite good.
