Commercial Description:
This year’s version of our annual limited release introduced a new step in the process, barrel aging. After primary fermentation, this step, done in aged bourbon barrels, adds a unique element to the beer. To go along with this special process we used three types of malts, including peated malt, in the fermentation. This combination adds elements to the beer reminiscent of fine Scotch Whiskeys. East Kent Golding hops add to the Scottish influence and round out this exceptionally complex brew. Once again, the beer is finished with a bottle conditioning step and, like its predecessors, should continue to improve with age. It is extremely limited, extremely strong, and extremely original, because as we like to say around here: "It’s All About Extremes!

Provided by argo0. Cloudy amber body with a tiny off-white head. Sweet cotton candy nose with toffee, golden raisins, honey and light citrus. The flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter with toffee, grapes, light pine and tangerine. Full body is round with light carbonation.

750mL bottle, courtesy of argo0. Thanks, Aaron! Pours a murky, deep orange color; minimal head formation. Aroma shows nougat, caramel, sugar, and some sticky alcohol; muddled and quite sweet. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: peated malts (reminiscent of Immort Ale), dried fruits, and caramel; intensely viscous and sweet malt presence - overly so, with minimum drinkability; light carbonation doesn’t help; generous peat presence, but messy malt otherwise; some alcohol poking through. Lengthy, candy sugar and wet malt in the finish.

Thanks to JJPM74. Hazy copper pour, small white head that fades to nothing. Aroma is slightly sweet and fruity. Flavor is sweet, light fruits, sugary and a touch of chocolate. Cloying sweetness and just a flat stale flavor to it. Honestly this had to of been a bad bottle and my notes say, IT’S FLAT AND SUCKS! Way too much money for this bottle, and fill them higher to get the air out.

Hazy orange color. Malty sweet aroma with light chocolate notes. The taste was malty and caramely with chocolate notes mixed in.

650 ml bottle

Thanks to crizay for sharing this as the night began to wind down. The bottles are pretty cool looking though it would have been nice if they were filled a bit higher. I’m intruiged to try and track down some of the earlier releases to see how they stack up. If they are anything like this I would not turn them down but am unlikely to actively trade for the set. Don’t let the high overall score fool you too much.

Aroma / Appearance - There was not much head as it settled into my tulip glass. The caramel body was so lifeless that at first I thought something was off. However the nose told a different story. Caramel, toffee and molasses gave a sweet vibe which encouraged me to give it a try.

Flavor / Palate - The mouthfeel was thick and cloying which was unfortunate. I was prepared to give it a chance until the third sip; more of the same tempted me to move on to something more interesting. There was not much flavor for a limited release. Instead I found myself looking for a chocolaty complexity that might have improved things. It is not bad but I found myself indifferent.
