Commercial Description:
This year’s version of our annual limited release introduced a new step in the process, barrel aging. After primary fermentation, this step, done in aged bourbon barrels, adds a unique element to the beer. To go along with this special process we used three types of malts, including peated malt, in the fermentation. This combination adds elements to the beer reminiscent of fine Scotch Whiskeys. East Kent Golding hops add to the Scottish influence and round out this exceptionally complex brew. Once again, the beer is finished with a bottle conditioning step and, like its predecessors, should continue to improve with age. It is extremely limited, extremely strong, and extremely original, because as we like to say around here: "It’s All About Extremes!

aroma is getting alcoholic, the earthyness appears to be growing and detracts from the malt rather than balancing it, once warm the malt kicks back in with a vanilla sweetness and the bourbon becomes apparent,

Cloudy honey color with a swirled film that ironically looks a bit like a hurricane. I’m sure the brewers planned it that way. No lacing, though it did show some sticky legs when swirled in the glass. The aroma is very sweet and candy like, showing caramel, bourbon, nougat, and butterscotch. The flavor shows the same elements, confirming the sweetness that the aroma indicates, but adding enough heat from the bourbon to balance it out a little. The palate is smooth and buttery, and the beer leaves a sweet, clean finish. Very nice brew that would make for an excellent dessert.

RBSG 2007 Grand Tasting. Clear dark gold, no head. Sweet fruit and light brown sugar nose. Sweet, sugary fruity flavors, caramely malt. Nice. Should get much better with age, and surpass it’s brothers.

Courtesy SoLan. Pours a slightly cloudy orange amber with a light tan head. Smells of dark malts and caramel with a big noticeable alcohol presence. Big beer. The taste is much the same, although I found the taste to be smoother than I was expecting. Alot of the caramel and malts in the flavor. Nice little sweet finish, aftertaste was oily and delightful. Goof brew. Enjoyed it.

The final vertical treat from hellomynameis who brought in all the Newport Storm vintages 2003 through 2006 to the RBSG ’07 Grand Tasting. This one was cracked open sometime around 1 am (I lost track of time after midnight). The 2006 Vintage pours a coppery amber brew with a fast dissolving off-white head. Aroma of caramel, almond, some bourbon, a touch of apricots and roasted nuts. Taste is sweet and fruity, with flavors of pitted fruit, bourbon, and flowery hops. Texture is full bodied with a light toasted malt aftertaste, then a gritty alcoholic finish. Probably the highest alcohol burn of the whole bunch. Could use some more aging.

More mellow and refined than the others I had. Lots of malty sweetness with some alcohol. Wasn’t all that great.

03-06 all tasted like barleywines. 06 is easily the weakest of the lot. Hot burn from alcohol. Some sweetness from sugar and a touch of fruit, distilled spirits, and a thin body. Maybe it needs time, or maybe it isn’t very good.
