Commercial Description:
This year’s version of our annual limited release introduced a new step in the process, barrel aging. After primary fermentation, this step, done in aged bourbon barrels, adds a unique element to the beer. To go along with this special process we used three types of malts, including peated malt, in the fermentation. This combination adds elements to the beer reminiscent of fine Scotch Whiskeys. East Kent Golding hops add to the Scottish influence and round out this exceptionally complex brew. Once again, the beer is finished with a bottle conditioning step and, like its predecessors, should continue to improve with age. It is extremely limited, extremely strong, and extremely original, because as we like to say around here: "It’s All About Extremes!

Bottled, thanks jjpm74! Cloudy amber, no head. Strong caramel aroma. Sweet and very malty with full body. Evident notes of oak, vanilla and whiskey. There’s lots crystal malt, some pears, lots of barrel character.

aroma is getting alcoholic, the earthyness appears to be growing and detracts from the malt rather than balancing it, once warm the malt kicks back in with a vanilla sweetness and the bourbon becomes apparent,

Bottle... Cloudy, light amber ale with a very small, frothy, white head. Perfumey, citrusy nose with additional, earthy notes of whiskey, vanilla and wood. Sweet, almost cloying, flavor with plenty of caramel and/or crystal malt, alcohol, fuzzy fruit and mild hop bitterness. Full-bodied with a milky mouthfeel and pillow-soft carbonation. Finishes sweet and boozy. A HUGE thanks goes out to growler for always supplying me with a generous sample of each year’s Newport Storm release! He’s a really nice guy. If you’re looking to improve your “beer karma” rating, mail him some free beer. He deserves it. Beermail him or me for his shipping address. Ho Ho Ho!

Pours a hazy copper bronze with a nicely-lacing spotty white head. Aroma of sweet, earthy complex caramel malts with nice bready yeast. Body starts fairly full and caramely with lots of bready yeasty and dark caramel malts. Finishes slightly thinner and drier with some alcoholic warmth. This could use some age, but could be pretty good.

Pours orange with a thin white head. Smells of peat moss, alcohol, oranges, some woodiness, mellow hop presence. Taste is sweet with lots of malt, sugar, oranges, bourbon. Good, but needs a few years to mellow out. Right now everything clashes.

Thanks to apoptosis and notalush for sharing this one. Deep amber beer. Very sweet and malty with lots of caramel, toast, lightly burnt sugar on the nose as well. Some soft apricot and peachy fruit along with loads of malty sweetness. Seems a bit too sweet and might benefit from a bit of age. It’s a decent if uninspired barley wine.
