Commercial Description:
For 2007 the brewers have selected a blend of 7 malts and 7 hops to create our unique annual limited release. When you decide to open this, you will notice a pitch black ale that pours with small brown head. The aroma is full of citrusy and floral notes, not only from the hops added from the boil but also the hops added after fermentation, the dry hop stage. Finally, one taste of this years beer and you will understand why it is so dark, roasted chocolately and malty flavors are abundant from the various dark malts that make up so much of the recipe. It is extremely limited, extremely strong and extremely original, because as we like to say around here "Its all about extremes!"

Bottle: Courtesy of cmr1517. Muddy brown in color with no head. I was immediately put-off by this. All alcohol with some mild malt and raisins in the aroma. Medium bodied mouth feel. Again...this was way too hot and unbalanced. Tastes boring and unmemorable. Some slight malts came through along with an alcohol soaked fruit tone but this was just bad.

750 ml corked cobalt blue bottle. Pours hazy deep black with very little head. Aroma is figgy vinous fruit, malt, raisins, spirit vapors. The taste is less than inspiring; absolutely no carbonation, some raisiny and figgy notes, matched by vinous fruit, malt, and some merloty and cognacy notes. This one is oxidized to a horrid degree, and I fail to see anything that would make me believe it ever was, or ever could have been, an Impy Stout. This beer may be the biggest disappointment I have ever had. I’d love to try a fresh one, but I won’t lose any sleep if I never see any of the vintages of this beer again.

Corked, blue 750ml bottle from jjpm74 - thanks! As others have mentioned, quite a bit of head space beneath the cork, I’d say 2+". The aroma begins to fill the room as soon as the cork is out, a bold molasses and brown sugar, some roasty malt. Pours almost black with no head. Chocolaty flavors, some dark fruitiness, hints of licorice and coffee. Oxidation has certainly kicked in. Body is a bit thin, somewhat slick, no carbonation. Dry, bittersweet chocolate finish, alcohol makes an appearance. This is really strange - flavors are really nice, with a better body, this could have been a winner, but it rolls about in your mouth like a wet, dead fish. I kind of wish I could have tried it right off the truck, so to speak. Oh well.

Bottle… VBWT2008… Pours clear and dark ruby, but sits pitch black in my glass with an insignificant, fat-bubbled head. Notes of chocolate, caramel and smoke constitute the aroma. Medium-bodied and a touch watery with soft carbonation. Well-balanced. Chocolate and caramel malt sweetness intertwines with alcohol and hop bitterness. Thin, burnt and bitter finish. Kudos to Beerlando for sharing his bottle!

Bottle thanks to jjpm: Has about two inches of head space beneath the cork. Pours a mostly still opaque oily black with dark mahogany edges. Fairly complex aroma of molasses and brown sugar with some oxidized caramel malt and dark chocolate. Body starts with a nice light sweetness and dark fruity character along with some doughy toffee and oxidized complexity. Finishes warming and bittersweet. This is definitely way more oxidized than a four month old beer should be and I question the amount of headspace in the bottle. That said, it tastes pretty good and if it had more carbonation to boost the mouthfeel and appearance, I’d score it about a 4.1. I just don’t think this one’s gonna age all that well though, because it already tastes like it’s 5 years old.

Big red fruit aromas with some plum and cherry. Nice nutty flavor. Pours a cloudy brown color with almost no head. Brandy like characteristics make this a sipping kind of beer. Pair it with some dark chocolate and you have yourself a nice little dessert.

Courtesy beerlando. Pours a very dark brown, with not much of a head at all. Smells of dark chocolate, dark syrpy malts, caramel, and subtle hops in the background. The flavor was light on carbonation, somewhat chocolatey, and very syrupy on the palate. Decent body to it, although wasnt all the way full bodied. Pretty good impy, although it was seemingly lacking of something. A little above average, but not mind blowing by any means.

Bottle at a tasting. This is the worst imperial stout I’ve ever tasted. Lightly roasty, a touch of molasses. I guess that doesn’t sound too bad, but the flavor was a disgusting, sweet, messy tar, harsh garbage, pissy... piss. YUCK! This bottle would be best used as a civilian weapon in riots.
