the sherry character is growing, rich chocolate manages to save it, this one will not make it too much longer,

Notes of chocolate, caramel and smoke constitute the aroma. Medium-bodied and a touch watery with soft carbonation. Well-balanced. Chocolate and caramel malt sweetness intertwines with alcohol and hop bitterness. Thin, burnt and bitter finish. Kudos to Beerlando for sharing his bottle! | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 21, 2008 Bottle thanks to jjpm: Has about two inches of head space beneath the cork. Pours a mostly still opaque oily black with dark mahogany edges. Fairly complex aroma of molasses and brown sugar with some oxidized caramel malt and dark chocolate. Body starts with a nice light sweetness and dark fruity character along with some doughy toffee and oxidized complexity. Finishes warming and bittersweet. This is definitely way more oxidized than a four month old beer should be and I question the amount of headspace in the bottle. That said, it tastes pretty good and if it had more carbonation to boost the mouthfeel and appearance, I’d score it about a 4.1. I just don’t think this one’s gonna age all that well though, because it already tastes like it’s 5 years old. jcwattsrugger (5333), Florida and, New Jersey, USA

Smells of lots of chocolate and coffee up front. Some dark fruit and alcohol emerge as the beer warms. Elements of oranges are also present as well as caramel, toffee and molasses. Tastes of lots of chocolate, caramel, figs, some woody character. Alcohol is also there, but not overly boozy. Mouthfeel is slick and oily. No dominating characteristic in this one, so I can’t really see it imporoving much as it ages. Very chocolatey, but a little thin and one dimensional for a beer with this much alcohol present. Where are the seven varieties of hops this description boasts? Tmoney99 (4739), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA

| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Feb 28, 2008 750 ml corked cobalt blue bottle. Pours hazy deep black with very little head. Aroma is figgy vinous fruit, malt, raisins, spirit vapors. The taste is less than inspiring; absolutely no carbonation, some raisiny and figgy notes, matched by vinous fruit, malt, and some merloty and cognacy notes. This one is oxidized to a horrid degree, and I fail to see anything that would make me believe it ever was, or ever could have been, an Impy Stout. This beer may be the biggest disappointment I have ever had. I’d love to try a fresh one, but I won’t lose any sleep if I never see any of the vintages of this beer again. | 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | May 26, 2008 Corked bottle given to me by Jason and served in my NB worthy glassware:
Like others, my bottle pretty much has no carbonation nor head. It was close to pitch black and there was some oily legs. The aroma has notes of liquorice, charred malt, raisin and prune, molasses, chocolate, herbal hops, leathery yeast and some oak. I did find some soy but nothing near the levels that others noted. The taste is moderately sweet and malt driven with a dark fruit twangy background. Some star anise and black strap molasses noted as well. What dry hopping? The finish is ashy, dry, smoky and a hint of tannins. The mouth feel has expected is near lifeless with the lack of carbonation. Not that is the only problem with the palate however as it is far too thin and boozy as well.
This offering is a complete mess that even properly carbonated bottles would not be able to fix. Extremely disappointing...
