I am rating it high to compensate for the the harsh ratings.I t is actually around a 3.5. Though it is mis-classified as an American strong ale, this beer is a Belian Abbey ale clone. Dark brown, with a lacing head. aroma is sweet chocolate, with an alcohol overtone. Mouthfeel is chewy. Flavor is chocolate and toffe. Nice beer. pineypower (1104), Pine Barrens, New Jersey, USA

The aroma is an intense caramel aroma. The taste is very nice with strong notes of caramel, chocolate and some fruit, with a slight finish of alcohol. I really liked this beer and have no idea why its not rated higher..... Lizabeth (360), east falmouth, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Feb 25, 2005 Bottle. Dark brown with a thick soapy head that fades fast and doesn’t leave lacing. Smell: minty, piney hops, hazelnuts, vanilla caramel, faint coffee. Taste: smoked cheddar and bacon with a strong sarsaparilla background. Full-bodied, slightly chewy palate. I didn’t like this beer at first, but it grew on me. Unique and tasty!

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 27, 2006 Bottle shared with HogTownHarry courtesy of hopdog. Pours a hazy orange-brown with an average size somewhat-lasting beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel malt, brown sugar, a touch of chocolate and alcohol. Flavour starts sweet and watery with caramel malt, nuts and mild chocolate and has a hoppy, roasty alcoholic finish. Light to medium bodied. This was pretty enjoyable and if it was more flavourful and had more body to it then it would be a really good beer. Definitely better then it’s score of 2.75. Cletus (5058), Connecticut, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 19, 2005 Pours dark red with a small head. Slightly oily. I was expecting a heavier malty beer. What I got instead was an attempt at an original beer that had strong hints of citrus, oranges and sugar. This brewer probably threw random ingredients into a vat then tested what came out, but in this situation, the 1000+ bottles churned out something tasty that I will be sampling (and possibly rerating) in the weeks to come. This one still hasn’t grown on me but it also hasn’t deterred me and has kept me interested enough to come back for more. HogTownHarry (4025), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 27, 2006 Bottle (12oz). Shared with blankboy, his bottle, via trade with hopdog. Poured deep clear mahogany with a large lasting tightly foamy beige head. Aroma is a surprising combination of candyish caramel roast malt and almost flemish sour wine & cider tartness - very yeasty, mildly fruity, the alcohol is quite apparent in the nose on warming, begins to take on an applejack character. Taste is of slightly burnt candy apple, alcohol and a hint of generic chocolate and light floral hops emerging with a hint of metal and quite a bit of malt and alcohol in its average-length, slightly sweet finish. Has an average mouthfeel, a little flat, lightly syrupy - I liked this wellenough, but I have a hard time figuring just what it wants me to think it really is. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 24, 2005 Bottle: Light ruby with a sparse off-white head, aroma has a little alcohol, sweet malts and caramel, medium body, starts and ends sweet with a nutty taste. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 8, 2005 Bottle. Pours dark with a decent frothy head and a good lace. The head is easy to summon with a slight agitation. Strong burst of sweet malts in the nose when the bottle is opened. Upon further investigation, the aroma is pretty good, albeit a tad on the strange side. Belgian yeast is there in abundance along with sweet malts, molasses and a slight spicyness. It’s strange the the metal didn’t come out in the nose. I mean, the metallic taste of this is incredible. I guess there’s also some grassy hops, molasses , clove and more metal. To it’s credit, it sweetened a tad when it warmed and the metal subsided ... or all of my taste buds died. I’m not sure I’d classify this as an American Strong Ale ... to me, it’s more like a Belgian Strong Bock. Strange.
