Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Malty/piney nose. Starts sweet but with the hops right there but not overwhelming, slight bitter aftertaste. Nice double IPA. $1.75 for a 12oz bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma. CaptainCougar (5457), Rockville, Maryland, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 14, 2006 Shared by goldtwins on 5/01/06: Pours a slightly hazy copper orange with a nicely-lacing, lightly frothy off-white head. Aroma of pine and spruce hops has a touch of earthy malty sweetness. Body starts with good sweet crystal malty character and fresh piney green hoppy presence. Pretty good balance with some warming alcohol toward the finish. A decent double IPA, just nothing special. Dickinsonbeer (3451), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jul 9, 2006 Split 6-pack with DYCsoccer17 up in Ct. Pours a slightly hazy wieght peachy gold with a white sticky head that eventually fades. Aroma is actually not as hoppy as expected in a big IIPA. Sticky sweet caramel malts, but even those arent that intense, then the light citrus and floral hops come in but are still nothing special. It almost seems like this might have been old and not quite as fresh as it should be, then I see some of the ratings and style percentile and think- yeah maybe its just not that great. Either way- for such a huge 8.6abv IIPA you should have more than 56 IBU’s which is what it says it has on the bottle. Flavor is a bit bland and therefore allows the alcohol to come through. Ok overall, and easy enough to drink, but not anywhere close to where it shoudl be for a IIPA. Cletus (5055), Connecticut, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jun 10, 2006 Pours gold with a white head. Smells malty with some lemony hints and grassy undertones. Tastes of citrus. Not very impressive for an IIPA. ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA
| 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | May 21, 2006 Sample at Julio’s beer festival: I was really wondering if this was in fact the IIPA. I’m so glad it’s rated this low, whew. I got almost no hops in the aroma, this coulda been an APA. Light bodied yet quite alcoholic. Light hops, light caramel, hint of bread. Ug. | 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 11/20 | May 21, 2006 Pours a lightly hazy redish orange color with a thick frothy off white head. Nose is lightly hoppy and sugary sweet. Palate is medium thickness with a bit of tingliness to it. Flavors of light grapefruit hops, lots of sugary sweetness, caramel and a bitter finish. goldtwins (4080), Nesconset, New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 2, 2006 Poured a mostly clear glowing amber color with a small white head. Sweet fruity aroma had notes of candy. Hops were light and there was some alcohol notes. Light citrus hop mixed in with the malt. It had a nice taste but tasted more of an IPA. Warming in the chest. The malt was a little short. Medium body. DYCSoccer17 (2191), Davis, California, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 1, 2006 Bottle in a Single Blind tasting with Southern Tier Un*Earthly IIPA. More subdued aroma than the first beer with a bit of caramel in the nose and more grape fruity hopped aroma. Booze is also present in the nose. There is a light sweetness present as well. This aroma is also very medicinal. Mildly hazy light copper/orange color with a frothy off-yellowish head and a fair amount of lacing. Nice grapefruity hoppiness to start that is not overbearing. There are cerealy/grainy/toasted malts backing up this hoppiness. Booze is slight in the finish with more moderate floral hops to finish. More balanced and drinkable than the Southern Tier. Alcohol is more subdued. Decent, but the aroma needs some improvement.
