Thinkin’ ‘Bout Thirteen Hours O’ Drinkin’ (tew man wrecking crew)... Hazy amber ale with a small, creamy, white head. The aroma is a nightmarish morphing of honey, pickled olives and vinegar with dark and fuzzy fruit sweetness. Full-bodied with nearly expired carbonation. Cloyingly sweet and acetic... a very bad marriage. Toffee, honey, molasses, raisins and prune blended with pickled cucumbers and pickled Kalamata olives. Finishes sickingly sweet. We thought our bottle was spoiled, until we read the other ratings which pretty much described our experience. How anyone could enjoy this mess of a beer is beyond me. mgumby10 (1844), Jupiter, Florida, USA Jun 15, 2008 Courtesy SoLan. Pours a cloudy dark copper color, with a medium, yet well retained light beige head. Smells of hints of vinegar and dark syrupy caramel malt, which didnt mesh together at all. Theflavor had more of that vinegar tast to it that I just couldnt get past. I got some semblances of fruits and malts in the finish, which saved face for this beer somewhat, but overall I didnt enjoy it at all. Not sure if this beer was designed this way, or if it was on the way out with somesort of infection. Either way, it wasnt for me. BBB63 (4199), La Porte, Indiana, USA Feb 2, 2008 Bottle fro beerbill and served in my NB worthy glass: Slightly hazed coppery hue with a fading frothy and and some lace. The aroma has an interesting dill pickle and vinegar vapour at first which slowly dissipates over layers of red fruits (strawberry and raspberry) along with some vanilla bean, caramelized sugars, green grass, wheat husk, and major yeast esters from start to finish.
The taste has an initial acidic bite and fruity undertone over which a blanket of wet grains becomes noticeable. The finish is dryer with toasty malt and mineral. The after taste has an lasting fruit juice twang about it. Some parts of this is interesting but then some of it is muddled and lacks focus. Not sure what was the goal here... jimhilt (1664), Bow, New Hampshire, USA Jan 29, 2008 Pours a five finger light tan head that fades slowly leaving some lace. Almost clear amber color. Light carbonation and medium-heavy bodied. Sweet malty nose. Flavor is sweet malt with raisins and spice. $1.50 for a 12oz bottle from Liquid Solutions Oregon City, Or.
Cryotek (206), Pawtucket, Rhode Island, USA Jan 27, 2008 The instant you smell this you can tell its a Belgian Ale. I am very impressed how it really captures te scent, look, and even taste of a real Belgian beer. Deep dark maple amber color. Bright off white or tan head that quickly goes away except for around the ring. Smells sweet, flowery, belgian yeasty smell. Most of there non-annual beers have a similar tasting quality like all the Sam Adams have, but this one really stands out and is very different, i would guess they used ingrediants from a totally different company. Tastes very sweet, fruity - nuits, apricoty, and maybe smaller notes of bannana yeast, and a fruity sour-sweet finish. Creamy, fruity, soft mouth feel, very smooth and rich to drink. 8.7% is complete hidden and well done. I can go on and on, but i really am impressed at this micro-brew’s effort at this style beer, very good! Acknud (770), Morganfield, Kentucky, USA Dec 20, 2007 Nice amber pour with a thick off white head. Aroma of heavy malt and fruit. Taste is sweet and full mouth yet easy to drink. FlacoAlto (2473), Tucson, Arizona, USA Nov 12, 2007 Pours with an initial fat-two-finger thick, tan colored head that sits atop a dark, plum colored brew. The beer shows a hazy, light cranberry color when held up to the light. The aroma is quite fruit focused with notes of tart plums, tamarind, raisins and perhaps a touch of apples. When I go in for a deeper smell I definitely get some funky sour notes that remind me of a mix of vinegar and lactic acid. Somewhat reminiscent of Rodenbach classic, the beer also has a nice caramelized malt character & toasty grain notes that is found in the nose of that beer. The sour notes are very slight though, but they are quite persistent.
Sweet malt flavors mix with fruit flavors of plums, raisins, apples and prunes. The plum and apple notes definitely are accented by a slight tartness. While the fruit and tart notes are the most noticeable, there is a solid malt character to this brew as well. Flavors of caramel, some of the raisin notes, toasted grain and a touch of soda cracker flavors, these last two in the finish more than anything. The beer finishes with a mix of sweet fruit notes, a touch of malt character, some slight astringency and a lingering light sourness. This is an easy drinking brew with a medium fullness to it that is actually made a bit more drinkable by the persistent sour notes of lactic acid.
I wouldn’t necessarily bet the farm that this beer is infected with something other than you standard beer yeast, but it definitely has a lightly tart character to it and is most likely has some wild influence to it. I really enjoy the light tartness found in this brew as it adds another layer of complexity to this brew. Quite a tasty brew, definitely a nice mix of sweet malt, fruit and a lightly sour funkiness (intended or not).
