hopdog (5525), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 27, 2009 12oz bottle. Poured a deeper and cloudy brown color with a larger sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, roastiness, and toasted nuttiness. Tastes of roast, nuttiness, chocolate, caramel, and some earthiness. bgburdman9 (822), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jun 18, 2009 Another old rating. . Aroma was all malts coming through and not much hop presence. A light tartness coming through on this. Little weird. dkachur (2313), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Jan 24, 2009 12 ounce bottle courtesy of beerbill. Thanks! Pours a dark brown color with a medium head. Poor head retention and lacing. Aroma is nutty with caramel and roasted malts. Taste is roasted malts and a big sour note. Seems off. Medium bodied. BeerandBlues2 (3200), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Dec 22, 2008 Bottle received via trade with AllDayDrinker. Pours dark brown with a small, fizzy, light brown head, somewhat lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, nutty), light hops (herbs), average yeast (leather, earth) with notes of plum, dates, and brown sugar. Medium bodied, oily texture, soft carbonation, and a metallic finish. Average duration, light sweetness, acidity, and bitterness. FlacoAlto (2473), Tucson, Arizona, USA Dec 16, 2008 A vigorous pour into my 25cl tulip glass produces a fat-two-finger-thick, lightly browned, tan colored head. The beer is quite dark, and looks like a very burnt, amber tinged color, when held up to the light the beer shows a brilliantly clear, deep ruby color. The aroma smells of well toasted malt, a touch of roasted notes, a soft nuttiness, perhaps a touch of cocoa, a lightly sweet burnt raisin note, some notes of sweet plum and even prune. The aroma grows on me after a bit and seems a touch more complex than I at first thought it would be.
Lightly sweet tasting up front with a touch of dry roasted grain in the middle that starts to balance this, the beer finishes though with a fair amount of tartness that seems a bit out of place. The tartness is fairly tart, but definitely noticeable, the beer is pretty clean though. Flavors of raisin and light concentrated plum up front are then greeted by notes of lightly roasted coffee, well toasted grain husks, a lingering roasted nuttiness and of course the tartness that brings out some notes of tart plums and even some roast grain acidity. The roast character lingers on the palate after each sip with an almost nuttiness as well as a touch of burnt bitterness. This beer is surprisingly light (which should be another warning, along with the tartness) for a beer of this strength and percentage of Munich, the carbonation actually is somewhat high and contributes a bit of fizziness to the texture as well.
I am starting to think that this clean tartness is a house bug that has intruded into a lot of the Newport Storm beers. Not bad, but the tartness is definitely a bit out of place. puboflyons (589), New Hampshire, USA Nov 21, 2008 From a 12. fl. oz. bottle with an expiration date of December 2008. Pours cloudy but dark reddish-brown. Very thin tan head. Aroma of chocolate but rather weak. Not real heavy mouthfeel but not watered down. Taste is a mix of dark chocolate and something sour. unclemike (834), Ft. Riley, Kansas, USA Nov 20, 2008 Pours a very dark brown with a thin-to-moderate creamy tan head .The nose is very earthy and robust with that bready and buttery malt There is also that nice bitterness from the hops each time you take a sip. Overall it is a decent american strong but there are far better ones out there.
surffisher (194), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Oct 23, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Pour relatively clear very dark brown with ruby highlights and no head - looks like a flat coke. Aroma is sweet and malty with some dark chocolate and very light liquor notes. Flavor is rather weak with sweet malt and some yeasty tartness that extends into a dryish finish. Medium mouthfeel, moderately low carbonation, rather watery. Below average offering.
