Aroma is nice and is of roasted malts and come cocoa. The aroma was actually better than that taste, a bit thin on the mouthfeel. Flavors mostly of chocolate, cocoa and some hops on the finish. Not bad.... OldGrowth (1426), North Carolina, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 6, 2006 Bottle, from Ryan & Casey. Ok nose, sweet. Cocoa, nutty. Initial yeasty/sourdough that disappeared as it warmed. Clean orangy brown color, small head that faded to a ring. Bittersweet flavor, nice mild Chocolate/cocoa with a narrow hoppy bitterness. Kind of tinny, but not in a bad way. Medium body, lite creamy mouthfeel, bitter finish. Tasty porter, surprised to see some of the low scores. Definately underappriciated. | 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 9/20 | Jan 27, 2006 Newport Storm Blizzard Porter pours to a deep brown/ebony color with a slight tan head, and a moderate amount of carbonation. The nose on this beer is very nice with lots of chocolate malt aromas, paired with slight hints of roast. The palate has good chocolate malt flavors, hints of coffee, and more touches of roast. The body is a bit thin on this beer, but it makes this beer very soft and drinkable. Blizzard Porter finishes with more chocolate flavors up front, then ends with a slighty roasty, slighty hoppy, bitter finish, that balances out the sweet and chocolatey malt flavors.
I like this beer, and found it to be a fresh, tasty, soft, brown porter with lots of good chocolate malt character. This is very evident in the nose, and on the palate. The chocolate malt character in this beer, makes it an ideal desert beer, and I would match it with chocolate layer cake. It has just enough roast and bitterness to make a nice contrast to rich and sweet deserts. In paying tribute to the Blizzard of ’78, one would think Coastal Extreme would have brewed up a bolder beer, such as an Imperial Stout, or at the very least a robust porter. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 22, 2005 Bottle. Not much aroma, mostly roasted coffee beans, and a little earthy aspects. Pours like any other porter. Still dark, still nice head. Light and fizzy in the mouth and VERY roasty. It’s like chewing on coffee beans. Almost no sense of the alcohol. Decent. Nice chocolate undertone, coffee and very drinkable. Eggshell head out of bottle. Good beer, if more Newport Storm was available I’d stock it in my regular rotation.
