The aroma is rich vanilla and some oranges with milk chocolate. The taste is roasted nuts with some bread. There is also a slightly dry character of leaves. A decent brew. pintbypint (1008), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 19, 2005 341ml brown bottle. Pours medium-red/brown, creamy but small tan head with nice lacing. Sweet malt and honey aromas. Rich malt flavour fades into more honeyish notes. A touch of bitterness lurks beneath it. Finished a bit lighter than I expected, with some grainy notes and some dryness. tiggmtl (4311), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Feb 17, 2005 Cooked vegetables, brown sugar and some nutty and toasty malts in the aroma. Clear amber-brown with decent off-white head that recedes to thin but lasting cover. Nutty, sweet, honey flavour is mildly botter with some cooked vegetables (DMS). Medium body with fair to moderate carbonation that is engaging on the tongue. Bottle (trade - Feb. 2005). Thanks, MrManning! steview (902), Los Angeles, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 7, 2005 english pint / big thanks to MrManning way up there in Canada! / label is completely different than current picture / upset that it’s a bit watery in the palate, but it’s good, anyway... like MrManning notes, it’s watery, but smooth the whole way down. slightly buttery, toffee, nutty, and just so subtle in and of itself. reminds me of Old Speckled Hen! if only this palate wasn’t so watery, i would rate at least to equate this to Old Speckled Hen--seriously. yet it’s not. less honey, more smoke, and more water than creamier and fuller mouthful. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 5, 2005 Mahogony body, initial 1 inch head, which eases off into a thin and delicate spiderweb of lace resting atop the body. Aromas are splendid. Roasted malt, campfire cooked nuts, and sweet brown sugar. Taste is bitterroasted nuts, smokey malts, and molasses. Slight coffee essence as well. Watery, but smooth all the way from start to finish. Mild bitter bite on entire palate.
Once again, Niagara Falls Brewing Company hits the mark. Balance of all aromas and flavours coming together in unison. I can already tell that Olde Jack, will one day be one of my olde favourites. Well done! Pigfoot (2226), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 19, 2004 Dark brown color, reddish tints, with a small, quickly disappearing head.
Aroma is woody, airy, but mostly vacant...nothing here, folks, nothing to smell, move along.
Crisp bite, initially, on the palate, then, poof! she’s gone!
Slightly fruity, but ultimately dry, flat, bland, medium-bodied, just a touch nutty...does nothing...boring, sad...delivers nothing of what you’d anticipate from an "old ale" of any stripe...utterly forgettable.

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 8, 2004 Sampled at the Toronto Festival Of Beer 2004. Dark chestnut-amber with a small tan head. Aroma of coffee, toffee and dark fruit. More coffee & toffee in the flavour, with a short, nutty finish. I used to drink a lot of this in my wayward youth, and it seems a little more porter-like than I remember - but then again, I generally drink enough of it back then to not remember very much the next day, so I could be mistaken... | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jun 27, 2004 Pours mahogony with a short sudsy brown butter head. Toasty hop sweet grapey nose. Brown sugar carries from the aroma to the palate. Very smooth but so is water. Not to say that it is overly watery. IMO it is just not that strong. Well it’s English style. Strong on bitter with a somewhat clean but salty finish.
