Had this at BJ’s Winter Ale Fest. Beer poured a murky dark amber with a small, frothy, light brown, mostly lasting head. The aroma was full and engaging: moderately malty with nots of toasted grain, caramel and molasses; moderately hoppy with notes of apricot and pine / resin; lightly funky with yeast notes damp cellar and mold; and different with moderate miscellneous notes of thyme, candy sugar and raisin. The flavor was moderately sweet and lightly bitter with a long, moderately bitter finish. The body was full, the texture was velvety, the carbonation was lively and there was a moderate alcohol feel in the ending.

Bottle from the Blue Max. Big notes of what semed like cinnamon and allspice, maybe? Had a flavor not unlike Grandma’s homemade spicecake. Some apple fruitiness combined with a hint of holiday spices.Alcohol was well hidden.

2004 bottle: Very light aroma of malts and spice. Thick and stubborn head that does not settle down for quite some time. Color is a dark amber red with dense brown tint. As the back label suggests to be served after dinner at 60 degrees fahrenheit, i have let it warm up a bit after a fine christmas dinner. The thyme and other malt spices such as: cinnamon, allspice, and clove are clearly present. On the aftertaste flavor, the orange peels become more noticeable along with a purple grape sourness. I would imagine after a couple years of cellaring this ale will be even more better.

750 ml. Amber-brown hazy body with a large, frothy tan head. The aroma is sweet with notes of caramel, toffee, brown sugar and cookie. Also notes of clove, raisin, dark fruits. Hint of dust, cobwebs. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and moderately bitter. Medium to full body with a velvety texture and lively carbonation. Delicious beer, sweet, spicy, complex and interesting.
