BoBoChamp (618), Gent, Belgium Aug 11, 2008 33cl, exclusive brewery, from De Hopduvel Gent, very complex, balanced, hazy, good head, very good brew, but not a topper chris_o (4405), London, Greater London, England Aug 10, 2008 330ml bottle bought from Willems, Grobbendonk. No best before date apparent. Mid red/brown colour with some floaters. Rich caramel aroma with some volatile alcoholic notes. Fairly fruity flavour, some nutty elements, again with noticeable boozy character. More chewy caramel. There are not too many Barley Wines from Belgium so I was interested to try this one. However, I didn’t really discern much to distinguish it from a Belgian Strong Ale and I found the alcohol a touch hot and intrusive for my taste.
Mes_and_Sim (4176), London, Greater London, England Aug 4, 2008 A Mes rate: Bottle at Chris O’s. Dark amber brown with a reasonable off white head. Heavy alcohol and caramel aroma that Pat called ’quite brutal’ and he was right. Thick soy, liquorice and caramel flavour. Pretty rough and rugged if you ask me. I can’t see what the fuss is about. caesar (2496), Zeist, Netherlands Jun 10, 2008 Bottled. Dark brown color. Aroma of dark fruit, malt, slight roasted. Slight bitter and roasted taste. Decent beer, but not a barley wine I would say. bhensonb (2832), Woodland, California, USA Jun 2, 2008 Tap at Delirium Tap House. Dark brown with a beige/tan head. Light floral aroma over roasted malt. Dark roasted malt. A little floral hop. Just a tad sour. A little coffee and some heat develop with time. Its a very good beer, just not what I am looking for at the moment. Could pass for a stout I suppose.
