Commercial Description:
Translation from website: "A beer with a strong, and obvious sweetness. Drink it now, or why not save it a couple of years? It will only improve with time."

This classic hearty ale started out a gold medal winner in the Swedish Homebrewing Championships in 1993, and went on to win gold in the World Beer Cup in 2000. A little something to see you through the longest darkest night.

Dark amber color, little vanishing yellow head. Sweet, vinous, caramelly, mildly alcoholic and port-vinous aroma, rich and excellent aroma which somehow reminds me of Samuel Adams Utopia. Full bodied, alcohol is hidden pretty well. Port-wine tones, sweetness, some raisins and plums in flavor, aftertaste lasts with sweetness, plums and medium alcohol. Maybe little bit of too sweet for my flavor, but fine alcohol flavor cuts it nicely. Wow what a Beer!

Smallish off-white coarse-laced head, subsides quickly. Body is a handsome, dark chestnut brown. At a distance the aroma is distinctly bready, but up close it becomes a mix of sweet, spicy caramel and alcohol, with stale raisins thrown in. Sweetness is a little sickly, perhaps. Broad, deep, intensely sweet taste of spicy, burnt caramel with a lovely aftertaste of charcoal malts with a faint bitterness. A taste of dry, roasted wood lingers. An excellent barley wine. I was a bit let down by the aroma, expecting more from Nils Oscar, but the taste makes up for it. (0.33l bottle.)

Bottle, at home. Dark red with a little beige head, quickly gone. Aroma heavy malty (caramel, bread, light notes of orange), light hoppy. Flavor heavy sweet, light bitter, long duration. Full body, creamy, soft carbonated. Heay in alcohol. Well balanced, very fine.

A very good pastiche from this Swedish brewer that even grow their own barley. A sweet/sour flavour, but the alcohol is dominating a bit. MAybe some time in the cellar would mellow this a bit?

Cloudy copper with little head. Malty aroma with port notes and some flowers. Malt flavour, but dry with some licorice and some alcohol. Bitter finish.

12 oz bottle, via MrWalker. Pours a clear bright caramel colored body with some thin wisps of off-white head. No sediment in bottle. Aroma is sweet with lots of caramel and toffee, with some alcohol and muscat grapes. Flavor is very sweet as well with lots of toffee up front fading to a fruity and alcoholic finish. A little lacking in complexity, and too fruity for my tastes. This could have benefited greatly from bottle conditioning. Mouthfeel is full bodied and very stickyw moderate fine carbonation. Overall, not a lot of complexity and the alcohol is very apparent, making this a slow sipper. Maybe if this were alowed to rest a while it would improve, but with the lack of yeast I’m not so sure.

Bottle, several times during 2004 and 2005.
This was the first Barley Wine I tried and I got hooked at once. Nice dark color, strong scent and taste, good bite from the warming alcohol. It might not be for everyone, but if you are looking for a Barley Wine, I can recommend it for sure.
