Commercial Description:
Translation from website: "A beer with a strong, and obvious sweetness. Drink it now, or why not save it a couple of years? It will only improve with time."

This classic hearty ale started out a gold medal winner in the Swedish Homebrewing Championships in 1993, and went on to win gold in the World Beer Cup in 2000. A little something to see you through the longest darkest night.

Amber bodied thin wispy off-white head. Aroma is sweet malty. The flavor is a bit one-dimensional, sweet with a even toned hoppiness. The palate is not as thick as expected. Ok. Maybe some age would improve it...

Single bottle purchased at Chucks in Chagrin. Drinking for my birthday celebration. Aroma is very rich and fruity. Plenty of earthy malt character that smells wonderfully aged, similar to how Old Horizontal smells when fresh. There’s that much character here. Flavor is a little sweeter than I would like, lots of sugary flavors with a nice amber-roasted-caramel malt flavor. Overall not bad, certainly smells great, but could use some aging.

Bottle from Knightly Spirits. Pours amber/orange with a rim of white froth and more bubbles than expected for the style. Obvious honey and syrupy apples dominate the aroma. Upon the first sip, the sweetness from the malts are apparent but not cloying. Flavors include more honey, malts, light fruits, raisins, oats, and caramel. The carbonation and full body are surprisingly balanced. An overall pleasant barleywine.

bottle from publican (which blows ass). i was rather disappointed with this pos at $15. i only got it since i was at this dinner with 10 friends for one of their’s birthday, and i knew that we were all gonna split the check, and as a vegetarian i knew i’d get royally screwed fiscally (and they were going crazy with ordering communal meat dishes), so i just ordered overly expensive beers to compensate. this was red and hazy, smelled of a bit of malt but mostly metal and alcohol, tasted like rotten fruit, alcohol, and rose, and was a tremendous waste of money.

Bottle: Copper orange pour with a wispy bubbly ring of off white head. Very sweet nose- huge barley sweetness of honey, vanilla, toasted coconut, plum and sherry. Creamy and slick palate. Very sweet flavor with notes of honey, vanilla. Low on the bitterness. Has the giant maltiness of J.W. Lees, but lacks the finesse and complexity. May improve with time.

Orlando, Fl. - Knightly Spirits, 11.2 oz bottle. Pours a nice medium copper with a thin, quickly dissipating white head. Deliciously sweet, fruity aroma with hints of dates and molasses. Warming, syrupy flavor with some nice subtle citrus notes, dates, raisins, a bit of caramel. Thick, rich mouthfeel. Excellent belly warmer.
