Commercial Description:
Nils Oscar Imperial Stout is brewed only in a limited edition. Also Nils Oscar Imperial Stout was awarded as the best beer in the world. This beer is brewed with many varieties of hops and malt, nothing saved to make the stout full of character. Imperial Stout is best enjoyed combined with the dessert but works wonderfully with oysters. The Nils Oscar Imperial Stout can be enjoyed today but preferably mature a couple of years.

THOUGHTS: My first Swedish beer. A nice chocolaty beer. Definitely more of a foreign stout than an impy stout. Nice, but not the best foreign stout I’ve ever had, I thought. But then, oops. It actually was nicer than I thought. I just had it a little too cold at first. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, dark brown that was black in the glass and dark red when held to the light. It had an average tan head that mostly diminished and left good lacing. The aroma was moderate to heavy coffee, chocolate syrup and cocoa powder along with some dark, sour fruit. The flavor started sweet, lightly bitter and sour; and finished sour and bitter with and average duration. There was both milk and dark chocolate, cocoa powder, and dark, slightly sour fruit, then a little bitter chocolate. The medium to full body was slightly oily, but also creamy with fizzy carbonation and a chalky and light to moderately astringent finish.

Brown bottle, 33 cl, best before 14 NOV, via Importations Privées Bièropholie, savoured on January 28 2009; eye: black, opaque, tiny ring of cappuccino head, no lacing; nose: roasted malt, molasses, liquorice, light soy sauce, cocoa dust, dark chocolate; mouth: roasted malt, lots of liquorice, I get a bit hops which means that there is probably way more than I think, strong coffee, dark chocolate, a bit of burnt malt, finale in roasted malt with a good presence of liquorice, quite a bit of acridness, medium-full body, slightly oily texture, astringency, mildly bitter, average carbonation, lactic; overall: quite likable FRANÇAIS Bouteille brune, 33 cl, meilleure avant 14 NOV, via Importations Privées Bièropholie, savourée le 28 janvier 2009; œil : noire, opaque, petit anneau de mousse cappuccino, pas de dentelle; nez : malt rôti, mélasse, réglisse, léger sauce soya, poussière de cacao, chocolat noir; bouche : malt rôti, pas mal de réglisse, je perçois un peu de houblon ce qui veut probablement dire qu’il y en a beaucoup plus que je pense, café fort, chocolat noir, un peu de malt brûlé, finale en malt rôti avec une bonne présence de réglisse, pas mal d’âcreté, corps moyen-corsé, texture légèrement huileuse, astringence, moyennement amère, carbonatation moyenne, lactique; en résumé : bien aimé

(330 ml bottle from Julio’s Liquors, cellared for 11 mos. after purchase) Pours very dark tobacco brown with a small tan head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, stewed dark fruits, perhaps a touch of molasses and brown sugar. Mouthfeel smooth, has a nice texture even though it is a bit loose and thin. A touch chalky in the aftertaste. Thin, weepy lacing. Fairly heavy chocolate and coffee flavor. Quite roasty. Light touches of dark fruit and molasses. Light-medium bitter pinch through finish. Some bitterness, chocolate and roastiness left in aftertaste.

Near-black, opaque pour with ruby highlights. Sweet currants, leather, chocolate, caramel, tobacco. On the shy side of full-bodied, chewy, sweet with a dry finish. Elegant and delicious.

Bottle sampled at the Hopsnobbery Collective stout tasting on 1.16.09 courtesy of Dogbrick. Pours darkest brown with a medium beige head. Aroma of coffee and a bit of sweetness. Malty flavor with coffee and chocolate that is slightly metallic. Pretty good foreign stout.

Sampled at the Hopsnobbery Collective Stout tasting on 01/16/09. This beer is nearly black with with a thin light tan head that diminishes steadily. Spotty lacing on the glass. The aroma is moderately roasty malt and chocolate. Medium, dry body with flavors of roasted coffee and cocoa. Mild hops bite as well. The finish is burnt malt and coffee with a lightly bitter hops aftertaste. Pretty good all around.

Thick black color-viscous. Minimal tan head. Good solid lacing. Big nose of licorice, malts, and chocolate. On the tongue, bit bitter.... chocolate, coffee, licorice. A bit sweet on the back end. Very different. Very nice!
