Commercial Description:
Nils Oscar Julöl 2007 is a dark beer with great power and complexity. It is topfermented with yeast from Belgium. We have used six kinds of malt and the hops Pacific Gem from New Zealand. The smell is roasted and soft with hints of licorice and blackcurrants. The flavor is warm and full with a complex charachter. Nils Oscar Julöl 2007 is excellent for glazed ribs, game meat, mature cheese, nuts and bitter chocolate, but can also be enjoyed on its own majesty.

Tasted 2007-12-13. Bottled. Pours dark red/brown. It’s sorta like smoke (almost ashtrayish) and dirty socks mixed together. However it’s not undrinkable. I even kind of like it, but it’s not my favourite from NO.

Dark reddish brown. The head sizzles then goes away. Aroma is smoked ham and tar. Flavour is cocoa, sour peat, smoke, ash and dark, very bitter chocolate. Boozy finish. Was it really supposed to taste like this? Or did I get TWO bad bottles?!

(50 cl bottle, from Systembolaget. Thanks for sharing ekstedt!)
Clear dark red color, brown small head. Burnt scent, smoke, soot, burnt pop-corn, ashes, rain in a camp fire. Did they malt their own but chared it by misstake and thought they’d still use it to save money? Big misstake if that was the case! Burnt wood, coffee and solvents alcohol taste, smooth mouthfeel. Medium bitterenss. I am usually not dissapointed in beers from Nils Oscar, but this one and the Trippel are just terrible, what has happened??

Bottle (50 cl) from Systembolaget. Dark murky brown with a small beige head. Roasted aroma dominated by notes of burnt popcorn. Medium bodied with soft mouthfeel. Good balance with a light sweetness and a dry finish. Could have been really good without that strange popcorn aroma.

Bottle. Unclear sparkling dark brown / red color with a large, frothy, good lacing, mostly diminishing, beige head. Aroma is light heavy malty, roasted, caramel, licorice, dark raisin / dry plum. Flavor is light heavy sweet and light to moderate bitter with a average duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. (111107)

Draught at Stockholm Beer Festival, 2007-09-21, 6-4-7-4-14=35
Cloudy dark brown color. The aroma is dusty, dark chocolate, ashes, black malt. The flavor is more convincing, with a good mix of very sweet caramel and chocolate malt, light liquorice and unfortunately traces of ashes; strong body; warming final. Good.
