Aroma is chocolate, roasted malt and a bit of coffee.Taste is smoked, roasted malt and hints of coffee and chocolate. It gets smokier as I taste it. No distinctive bitterness, quite smooth and sweet. It has a really good smoke taste (and I’m not a smoked beer lover). This beer surely helped me get into it !! Fiant alcohol taste at the end. Really enjoyed this beer and I’m grateful I did not see it was a smoked beer because I probably would not have tried it !! DougShoemaker (2856), Toronto, Canada

Aroma is smoky roasted malt, with coffee and dark chocolate, dark brown, small tan head. Flavour is such a nice mix of smoke, cocoa, coffee and toasty malt it’s like sitting around a campfire enjoying these "comfort food/drinks." Medium bodied, very well balanced, pleasantly bitter too. Terrific!

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 28, 2009 Very dark brown color with nary a bit of light passing through. Creamy, caramel colored head. Smoked meat and a hint of malt in the aroma. Now I’m getting the itch to go smoke something. As it sets the smoke slowly fades, but the solid malt background holds things together. Moderately thick, with very soft effervescence that seems to melt on the tongue. Light start with some darker malts seeming rather thin. Middle gains some heft with more dark malts and a lightly charred cedar. Now I"m thinking of a cedar planked entrée’. This one begs for a smoked or grilled meat, of perhaps a hearty stew of chili. Touch of iodine. Dry finish and linger. A bit more malt character could be carried to the end, but still I finding everything else quite enjoyable. I think the dry finish just makes me want more.

Strong rauchbier smoke flavor. Some dark roast coffee and very subtle chocolate. This little fruity/cherry quality is still lurking around. Velvety smooth and thick. Very nice! | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 24, 2009 Bottle from Binny’s in Plainfield, IL: This poured an intensely dark brown with a thick tan head that left only spotty lacing. The aroma was dark malt, bittersweet chocolate, cigar ashes, and smoked ham. The flavor was only delicately smoked and a touch of floral bitterness that showed up near the end. Not bad.
