Thick, dark pour with a nice foamy head. Thick roasty chocolate and malty aroma. Silky, creamy beer with a chocolate taste and a smooth finish. This was damn good. I didn’t really taste any smoke in this one.

Pours out a warm, opaque sable with a fairly thick tan head that does not hang around very long. Aroma is rich, sweet and smoky with a definite undertone of fine roast coffee. Flavor is rich and smooth, smoky with a coffee undertone and a strong hint of unsweetened chocolate, just slightly sweet. Texture is thick, smooth and quite fizzy, leaving a smoky and unsweet chocolate finish.

Draught at Stockholm Beer Festival 2007. Dark reddish brown color. Malt, beechwood smoke and leather in the aroma. Sweetish, malty, chocolatey, woody-smoky and slightly caramelly flavor. Drying smoky finish with tar and bitter chocolade. Strong flavor, yet balanced and very tasty.

brown head, black colour frothy foam, looks very apetizing. aroam of tar, roasted malts and smoked sausage and some dark fruit. flavour is roasted malt, tar sugar. with a bit more taste in the finish, maybe with a little more alcohol, this would have been the best porter i’ve ever had.

20091129 500ml bottle, State Line Darkest brown with small but lasting head of uneven beige bubbles. Aroma is surprisingly rich with deep interminglings of chocolate, leather, rum, old pipe, and moderate levels of smoke. Deeply complex and interesting aroma; one of the first beers I’ve truly lingered over in a long time. Unfortunately, the flavor doesn’t quite keep up. It’s not completely surprising given that it is a mere porter, but the flavor is more simple, though still a pleasant blend of pipe tobacco, very dry roasted malt, light chocoate, and lingering smokiness. It’s about the pleasant flavor profile I would expect from a solid smoked porter, it just doesn’t compare to the aroma. Body is medium-light with a late astringency and slight citrus bitterness late on the palate. Lightly tart acidity and some grassy notes as well. Really nice beer I will surely buy again.

Dark red/brown, almost black. Fine head. Aroma is smoke, coal, ash and meat. Smoked, ashy but well balanced flavour. Long, smoke dry finish. Very drinkable.

Deep brown in colour with and thin quick to dissipate tan head, very light patchy lacing. Aroma is rather smoky, lots of chocolate malts, roasty and liquorice. The flavour sees the smoke step back a bit and you get more chocolate and roasted malts. Smoky and malty mouthfeel, medium body, medium carbonation. Finishes long, smoky and malty.

Excellent balance, the smoke never overpowers. Good stuff, unbelievable aroma.

Bottle at Mondial 2009 in Montreal, Quebec.

Sampled on June 4, 2009.
