Aroma is rich, sweet and smoky with a definite undertone of fine roast coffee. Flavor is rich and smooth, smoky with a coffee undertone and a strong hint of unsweetened chocolate, just slightly sweet. Texture is thick, smooth and quite fizzy, leaving a smoky and unsweet chocolate finish. Miksu (2231), Jyväskylä, Finland

Aroma is surprisingly rich with deep interminglings of chocolate, leather, rum, old pipe, and moderate levels of smoke. Deeply complex and interesting aroma; one of the first beers I’ve truly lingered over in a long time. Unfortunately, the flavor doesn’t quite keep up. It’s not completely surprising given that it is a mere porter, but the flavor is more simple, though still a pleasant blend of pipe tobacco, very dry roasted malt, light chocoate, and lingering smokiness. It’s about the pleasant flavor profile I would expect from a solid smoked porter, it just doesn’t compare to the aroma. Body is medium-light with a late astringency and slight citrus bitterness late on the palate. Lightly tart acidity and some grassy notes as well. Really nice beer I will surely buy again. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 12, 2009 Deep brown in colour with and thin quick to dissipate tan head, very light patchy lacing.
Aroma is rather smoky, lots of chocolate malts, roasty and liquorice.
The flavour sees the smoke step back a bit and you get more chocolate and roasted malts.
Smoky and malty mouthfeel, medium body, medium carbonation.
Finishes long, smoky and malty.
Excellent balance, the smoke never overpowers. Good stuff, unbelievable aroma.
