Commercial Description:
Our Old Monkeyshine Ale is an exceptional example of a true, traditional-style English Pub beer. Nimbus Old Monkeyshine Ale is medium bodied and possesses a distinct, dark roasted flavor. Its sweet malty taste is derived from liberal use of seven varieties of specialty malts and a touch of brown sugar. Our Old Monkeyshine Ale is dark in color, beginning with a slight caramel malt overtone and rounded with a relatively dry finish from its English Kent Goldings hops. The hops aroma is mildly subdued and the bitterness is just enough to balance the profile of this beer. Nimbus Old Monkeyshine Ale is a true premium ale and is priced accordingly. We're so proud of this beer for its body, taste, alcohol content and drinking enjoyment, it may just become our signature beer. Be warned: its wonderful malty sweetness camouflages the 8.0% alcohol by volume content. It's a winner!

Nice strong brown ale. Dark amber color. Very sweet smelling. Extremely roasted and a nice touch of caramel malt sweetness. Very full bodied ale. Slight hop punch in the background. Very nice brown ale for those chilly nights.

Bottle... Dark, cloudy, burnt orange ale with a small, creamy, beige head. Terrific retention. The malty, caramel aroma also offers vinous notes and a hint of molasses. Bold, beefy flavor with chewy malts and restrained alcohol. Good balance; moderately sweet and just bitter enough. Full-bodied with medium carbonation. Finishes mildly bitter and warming. Kudos to FlacoAlto for supplying the bottle!

Very deep reddish amber pour, nice, with little creamy head. Mild smell, slighlty sour and a little bit like maple syrup. Flavor is very mild, slighly sour and malty, almost watered down. Nice try Nimbus, but not that great.

Beyond entertaining names and labels, Nimbus had failed to impress and so my suspicions of the brewer were to remain mediocre without an intervention of my last two contenders. Unfortunately, Old Monkeyshine was not the miracle I hoped for. In appearance it gloomed coagulating red, and bubbled a custard froth. Metallic grape juice emerges on the nose, followed by tinny malts of the caramel and coffee varieties, and a melange of fruity and earthy qualities. Cherry and unmistakable watermelon appear at first, but soon reveal the more pungent aromas of walnut and raw pumpkin. An awkward sensation of sour grapes replaced the metallic aspect on the tongue, engulfed in bland chocolate malts, raw pumpkin and piney hops. The palate is pleasantly soft and certainly hides its alcohol, but finishes in a bumbling bitter and sour aftertaste. Unique, but not the profile I enjoy.

Bottle acquired in trade with FlactoAlto (thanks!). Poured a deep reddish / brown with an averaged sized off white head. Lots of small floaters. Aromas of caramel, light chocolate, roasted malts, brown sugar and all around malty. Softer tastes of caramel, roasted malts, and chocolate. Alcohol content hidden. A bit on the thin side.

Thanks to Immy for this one. From bottle, pours a red mahogany with tan fo9amy head. Nose is light, sweet malt. Flavor is earthy malt with a light bitter finish. Surprising this was 8%!

Nice off white head, which recedes, but covers the top, and gives good lace. Malty aroma. At first tastes like an irish red, then all of a sudden a metalic sour copper taste overwhelms your whole mouth. It may be spoiled, as the sensation and taste are like nothing else i have ever tasted, and it’s pretty offensive to me. Yuck. Had to pour out two thirds of it! I had high hopes when is saw this from a local brewer. Very dissapointed.

Small light brown head, short lived, spotty lacing. Dark brown color is lightly hazy with light red highlights. Nose is choco nutty with a faint sourness. Body is med/light, bland mouthfeel. Light chocolate flavors, a hint roasty with some tobacco notes and that little touch of sourness coming through. Finish is almost dry with a light astringency. Raspy, dry prickly mouthfeel. Thanks to cbkschubert for the trade.
