Commercial Description:
Our Old Monkeyshine Ale is an exceptional example of a true, traditional-style English Pub beer. Nimbus Old Monkeyshine Ale is medium bodied and possesses a distinct, dark roasted flavor. Its sweet malty taste is derived from liberal use of seven varieties of specialty malts and a touch of brown sugar. Our Old Monkeyshine Ale is dark in color, beginning with a slight caramel malt overtone and rounded with a relatively dry finish from its English Kent Goldings hops. The hops aroma is mildly subdued and the bitterness is just enough to balance the profile of this beer. Nimbus Old Monkeyshine Ale is a true premium ale and is priced accordingly. We're so proud of this beer for its body, taste, alcohol content and drinking enjoyment, it may just become our signature beer. Be warned: its wonderful malty sweetness camouflages the 8.0% alcohol by volume content. It's a winner!

Poured a dark ruby with a fizzy off-white head. Aroma is plums, piney hops, a touch of caramel sweetness. Flavor is somewhat thin dark fruits, stale hops and metallic toffee. With chewier malts and American hops, I’d probably like this a lot more. But then it would probably be an ASA instead of an ESA, and it’s no coincidence that I like the former more than the latter. Still not a bad attempt.

Hazy dark amber color. Earthy caramel aroma, very light manure too. Medium body strength, caramel flavor, but with cabbage off-flavor, vegetables. Correct bitterness. Wrong.

Bottle, thanks to Craig! Poured deep, ruddy brown with a short-lived cap of off-white head. The aroma picked up sweet, toasted darker fruits, toffee, and cocoa with accents of earth and vanilla.. warmth brought out dirty alcohol notes that seemed off. The flavor found caramel, toffee, and fruit at the core, paired with rum-laden figs, earth, and much less pronounced cocoa.. the toasty finish was alright, but carried through some of the off flavors. Medium-bodied with rolling carbonation on the palate.. just a little rough around the edges.

Bottled. Darkish brown, murky pour, with a touch of head. Full, nutty, grainy aroma, with a an earthy flavor finishing in a touch of tart and brown sugar. Very clean and true to style. Easily quaffable, despite its high alcohol content.

courtesy of fiulijn - clear brown colour with a poor head retention; aroma of wood and nut; good malt body and with some sweetness; a solid bitterness before a finish of bitter almonds and cabbage; quite soapy

12 oz. bottle courtesy of a trade with Sparky27. Pours a hazy orange-gold with a large fluffy tan head that lasted through most of the glass and left partial lace. The aroma is weak crystal malt and not much else. The flavor is mostly crystal malt with some brown sugar and a touch of orange. Mediocre.

Dark copper pour with a small eggshelll head that left just a spot of lacing. Aroma is roasted malt, smoke, and cocoa. Surprisingly, chocolate finds its way to the palate along with caramel and brown sugar. Medium mouthfeel. Best of the bunch.
