JMFG (1514), Florida, USA Mar 6, 2009 Bottle. Hazy ruddy brown color, thin broken soapy white head. Very malt-forward aroma, but some earthy hops in background. Taste has more of a hop presence, but certainly not overwhelming or even significant, more of a simple citric finish. Decent, well-held together, but not hoppy enough for something called a double red. stchloe (473), Portland, Oregon, USA Feb 23, 2009 Far and away a favorite. Large body, and roasted barley and dark malts, and tons of hops, and a good ABV and it just lasts on the tongue. And Wow! drfabulous (1212), Columbia, Missouri, USA Feb 21, 2009 Smells like a barley wine. Deep red malt aroma. Tastes like that cross b/w barley and double IPA. Very sweet, caramel....but a bit of a musty taste lingers in there as well. Nice. snakeoilpete (324), Seattle, Washington, USA Feb 16, 2009 Updated: Mar 6, 2009Bottle. Pours a DARK red (well, pretty much brown) with a fading tan head. Nose is mostly hoppy with a sweet strawberry fruitiness. Surprising amount of earthy and coffee-like roasted malt in the taste before the hops take over. A little bit of caramel sweetness too. Nice, long bitter finish, but the mouthfeel is just a little watery. brianprentiss (473), Portland, Oregon, USA Feb 3, 2009 crisp yet full ale. wouldn’t have placed it in american strong ale category, but plenty of taste and would drink again. bitbucket (2026), Kirkland, Washington, USA Jan 29, 2009 Bomber. Pours cloudy (lots of chill haze) coppery amber with a lacy pale yellow head. Lots of sweet caramel aroma with a little citrus and grass. Medium body and moderate carbonation. More caramel, earth and citrus in the taste. Crisp finish. lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA Jan 26, 2009 Bottle in trade from msubulldog25. Thanks! Smell was a bit dull and stale like, I thought, and it poured a reddish maroon color. Taste was dull, and odd, and not what I expected. Tasted like stale hops, and not very fresh malt, but not sure if it was really due to it not being fresh. Didn’t enjoy this one. Travlr (698), Washington, Washington DC, USA Dec 27, 2008 Salt, vinegar, port wine, grapes, malt and chocolate all in one beer. Somehow it works. Gift from the girls at Uber, thanks.
