Nodding Head 60 Shilling Ale

Mild yet flavorful. Grain/malt/slightly chewy. Big of smoke in finish. Roasty aroma. Good example for the light scottish it is. I wasn’t expecting it to be a crazy wee-heavy because its not a scotch ale. Having sampled quite a few in the style made in Scotland, I think it was true to style. I just wish it wasn’t filtered.

Enjoyed a pint of this one on draught at the brewery in Philadelphia, PA. Pours to a bright, deep amber color, with a tall white head, and a moderate carbonation. The nose is malty, with aromas of sweet malt, light smoke, and hints of light toast and nuts. The palate offers more of the same, nutty and toasty malt, with some light flavors of caramel. This beer finishes with more light nutty and toasty malt up front, then ends with light smoke flavor, and some grassy hop bitterness to balance. A good example of Scottish Ale. Perhaps my palate was jaded from the other fantastic beers I enjoyed at Nodding Head, but this beer seemed to fall a little short of the mark. That being said, it was tasty, very drinkable, and clearly well made.

Pretty alright. It’s nice to see a 60 Schilling around. Light and creamy, but with enough flavor to keep me drinking. Very easy to sip, and the flavors are clean.

Tap at the brewery. 4.75% ABV Very light malty graininess in the aroma. Clear amber brown with small white head. Light grain and smoke in the flavor. Very clean with light roastiness in the finish. Very sessionable.

Deep amber color with a small tan head. Malty and roasty aroma. Very light smoke and caramel taste. Some roast in there as well. Very nice subtleties in this cask conditioned beer.

Draft - part of sampler at brewery. Pours lighter brown with orange highlights. Light malt in the aroma, with some earthy notes. Flavor is again the mild malts, with some caramel sweetness and some earthy/grassy components. Pretty nice. Very drinkable.

On tap at the Nodding Head Brew pub, Philadelphia, PA. Clear dark brown Scottish-style ale having small white diminishing head. No discernable carbonation. Sweet malt aroma. Medium bodied that starts with lightly sweet malt. Slight off-flavor (oxidation product?). Finishes with slightly sweet malt after taste. No discernable hops and bitterness. A good drinkable malty session beer, similar to Bass ale.

Tap at Nodding Head. Pours copper with a bright white ring. Nose is light and malty. Taste is sweet, malty with some toffee, decent.
