The aroma is super hoppy with lots of grapefruit and some herbal things going on. Some sugar. The flavor is bitter, grassy, grapefruit, and herbal hops. Chocolate malt on the finish. Some heavy sweet caramel malt up front. Resiny bitterness and moderately sweet mouthfeel. Cryotek (206), Pawtucket, Rhode Island, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 20, 2008 Nice dark reddish chestnut color with a short off-white head that quickly disappears. Strong hop aroma. Lots of caramel and roasted malts. A sugary sweetness that goes along with the bitterness. Very warming, what i think an Imperial IPA should be. This pours a very dark brown with a minimal head. Noting that it’s a double IPA (w/ an incorrect American labeling of it as a barleywine) it looks more like a barleywine. Bitter, dry tasty. Nicely done sersdf (1000), chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Apr 18, 2008 500ml bottle, thanks a ton to nhorween for his gift package. i love his package. this poured far darker than i was expecting, harkening back to barleywines before they were glorified double IPA’s. close to opaque, dark eggplant color. changing it up from plum. the aroma is hoppy at the front, lots of honeyed walnuts, strong dark fruits, and generally sweet. nuts, resin, earthy. tastes surprisingly dry. shockingly so. immediately bitter and hoppy, chocolate comes from the bottom, pretty astringent, and alcohol rounds the side warmingly without really tasking like alcohol. i had this at cellar temp, but i wonder if it’ll be too alcoholic by the time i’m nearing the end of the bottle. body is interesting, very full bodied and thick but with a pretty fair amount of carbonation lingering in the end of the swallow. there’s no way this is a IIPA if that’s what nogne thinks. especially with the chocolate malt and, interesting, wheat, this reminds me in its unclassifiability of old viscosity. it’s pretty doughy. jhumphries69 (728), Tyrone, Georgia, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Apr 15, 2008 375ml bottle. Pours a very cloudy and very dark brown (opaque, almost black) with subtle highlights of orange and brown at the outermost edges of the glass (light cannot penetrate anywhere else). The foam is tan and pours up immensely and lasts quite a long time. It leaves a huge amount of thick lace that looks like sheets of pockmarked, beaten egg-whites lining the glass - except tan, not white. The aroma is intense - lots of Columbus and Chinook hops and lots of alcohol. There are subtle notes of malts in the aroma - but mostly from the roasted grain as it is somewhat chocolatey and somewhat ashen. There are also dark fruits and a subtle woody aroma (oxidation?). The flavor starts with lots and pine, spice, alcohol, citrus, and dark, soft fruit. What an intense hop flavor! The next wave of perceived by the tongue is malts - lots and lots of chocolate notes with some molasses and caramel notes that lend a residual sweetness that balances the huge hop flavors and add to the overall fruitiness. At mid-palate the hop flavors give way to a war between bitterness - (astringency for the first few sips, until the palate gets acclimated) - and sweet, fruity malts. The finish is dry and almost astringently hoppy (pine needles, cough syrup, spices). The mouthfeel is rich and creamy with some slipperiness and a decent body - medium-full. The carbonation is somewhat restrained and adds a pin-prick texture to the front palate. Overall, a very intense and complex brew. Double IPA??? No way. Barley wine, as the label indicated, is a little closer to the truth. Yes, it is far hoppier than most barley wines (in fact it may even put Sierra Nevada’s Bigfoot to shame in that area), but it is too rich and full in texture and in finish, and it’s too dark, chocolatey and malty to be a double IPA. I’d say it’s a specialty beer - perhaps Double India Brown Ale is the proper nomenclature. DavidP (1743), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 15, 2008 Dark brown body small tan foamy head. Not much of an aroma just hoppily effervescent caramel malts. The flavor kicks in lots of red-fruit crystal, white frosting; finishes with nice strong bittering hops and pine. Good mouthfeel as well. A nice BW :-) MIBRomeo (1965), Wisconsin, USA

beautiful dark tan pour that blew bubbles after a glass was poured. Creating a tall thick tan well laced head. Big hoppy aroma lots of grapefruit a bit of pine with touches of caramel and hints of alcohol. Palate is full well coated and lightly creamy. Delicious big flavor a bit resinous in the mouth. Starts sweet with light syrups and a hint of plum followed by a dry bitter finish with a nice grass and pine over a touch of citrus. Very good. More IIPA than BW to my tongue but delicious either way.
