Commercial Description:
Our 100th batch, brewed for the enjoyment of the brewers, but popular demand forced us to release it commercially. Most enjoyable in a comfortable chair in front of a roaring fire.

Recommended serving temperature 16°C/61°F Ingredients: Maris Otter, wheat, and chocolate malt; Columbus, Chinook, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

23,5°P, 80 IBU, 10% ABV.

Editor's note: Even though the label says "Barley Wine" in the States, the brewery says it's brewed to be an IIPA. The American label was a glitch. In Europe it's sold as an IIPA.

Poured from a 500ml bottle, and served in a tulip. The label on the bottle said "Barley Wine". This brew poured a dark brown color with a large, rocky, dark tan head. Some very thick, sticky lacing was left behind. The aroma of the beer consisted of piney/citrus hops, light chocolate, and also a bit of caramel. The flavor was made up of chocolate, french roast coffee, and light pine. The mouthfeel was full-bodied and thick and creamy with light carbonation. I am still not sure what to think of this beer. I would not describe it as a barley wine or an IPA. It was definately not as hoppy as a normal double IPA, but at the same time, it also lacked the complexity of a fine barley wine. The flavor almost came across like a hoppy stout. The best way I can describe it is as a high alcohol stout with a very bland flavor. It sure seems like a candidate for the American Strong Ale category. A bit disappointing, to say the least.

Pours a deep brown almost bordering on black with a large foamy/bubbly tan head that left tons of lacing. Aroma of orange, pine, dark fruits, toffee, caramel and floral notes. Flavors of toasted malts, coffee, nutes, pine, grapefruit, hop flavor and bitterness, tobacco, dark fruits, caramel and some cocoa.

It says "Barley wine style ale" on the label. Very dark burgandy, wuth a beige head. Interesting aroma - coffee and caramel, mostly. Flavor is herbal, earthy, and notes of coffee and pipe tobacco and leather. In a good way, of course. Thanks to Springslicker for bringing this to the tasting.

Bottle via trade with John_adam2002.. Batch #167. Two years old and finally getting imported to the States? Hmmm... Muted sweet, piney hops, alcohol and some sweeter malt on the nose. Pours deep, dark brown with a big, khaki head. This is an IIPA? Doesnt look or smell thus far. Flavor is more along the lines of a barleywine of ASA. Grapefruit, grape skin, wood and a lingering bitter astringency. Lacks the bright zesty citrus and oily pine of IIPA’s. Medium bodied. Finishes with a lingering bitterness. I wonder what this was like 2 years ago...

500 ml bottle. Pours a brown cola color with a creamy off-white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet sugary caramel malts and dark fruits with some spicy (slightly piney) hops and alcohol in the background.

The flavor is sweet and watery cola and some fruitiness with a harsh salty and tar-like bitterness at the finish. The alcohol is pretty harsh. The mouthfeel is medium to full and kind of watery.

Overall, too much harsh alcohol and bitterness for me. I don’t get any grapefruit or pine from the hops which is disappointing. It reminds me some of Flying Dog’s barley wine which I really didn’t care for either.

Bottle purchased at Liquor Max in Loveland, CO. Pours brown with a small, frothy, light brown head, somewhat lasting, spare lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, nutty), average hops (pine, perfume), average yeast (dough) with notes of alcohol, dates, and port. Medium bodied, sticky texture, average carbonation and a bitter finish. Average duration, light sweetness, heavy acidity and bitterness. This one is still a bit young.

Murky brown color with a Dark canvas colored lasting head with nice lace. Fairly simple aromas of toasted malt and light grapefruit. Dark caramel cover hops flavors. Middle is choke-full of hops with citric zest and light pine. Lightly spicy finish with some white pepper. Long bitter linger with a woody quality. An interesting brew. Cross between a barleywine and an american strong.

Says barleywine on the bottle, IIPA on ratebeer, and right away can tell why theres a discrepency. Pour is really dark brown, looks like a mean dark malted heavy duty barleywine. Nose is of hops with an almost rye kick. Flavor is similar, seems like an overly aged IIPA or a slightly ageg barleywine. Good, but ot over the top great.
