| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 14/20 | Sep 6, 2009 Has an opaque dark brown-ruby pour with an off-white and tan bubbled head, I see effervescence made up of tiny bubbles in the glass when held up to a light, leaves some to medium lacing on the glass, there is some dark sediment in the bottle, aromas of chocolate (reminds me of tootsie roll) with citrus hops, toasted malt, faint caramel, flavors of chocolate with toasted and roasted malt, dark bread, caramel and faint brown sugar sweetness, this ale appears to be made around chocolate (which is ok by me), this beer has a good dose of hop bitterness but I thought this fell short of a DIPA for hops on the nose and mouth bitterness, of course I do not know how old this bottle is and the hops may have fallen off a bit, mouth feel is medium or a little more, feels very nice on the palate with creaminess. This brew hides the 10% alc. very well, even at room temperature, I did not taste any alcohol. I thought this drink had an interesting mix with the chocolate and hops, the hops did not pound the tongue with hops as I was expecting, even so, this is very nice and I enjoyed this drink. jonno (596), Brisbane, Australia
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Sep 5, 2009 This was very good and more a barleywine than a DIPA to me. Big nose and body of dark fruit and sweetness, with some decent hop bitterness coming through, but not DIPA territory. A siper punkrkr27 (641), Berkley, Michigan, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Sep 4, 2009 Dark mahogany pour with a slight ruby highlight and a small, frothy, off-white head. The aroma is an even blend of resiny pine and caramel with hints of dark fruit, orange peel, and licorice. Smooth, rich, malty flavor with lots of dark resiny pine and citrus and a note of cocoa. Creamy medium-full body with soft carbonation. segfault (98), Centennial, Colorado, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Sep 1, 2009 Tasted thanks to alakanwarren sharing a bomber w/ me from his beer cellar. This is an excellent beer, but I hesitate to call it a barleywine. It has earthy and roasty notes, and it is quite bitter... we had it at the end of a flight of big beers, and the bitterness was so intense that, since I didn’t have another half hour to sit and sip it, I had to pass over and let alaskanwarren finish it. Exciting, different, and I’m glad i got to try it. Narnad (720), Wonder Lake, Illinois, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Aug 30, 2009 Pours a very heavily hazed/murky dark brown with a very big, small bubbled tan head that leaves fantastic lacing. Aroma is strong citrus, very heavy of a bitter from the Columbus/Centennial mix, a tootsie roll chocolate, light coffee undertone next to a late, deep Maris toasted malt note. Aroma reminds me of a brown ale with a ton of hops. Flavor is very complex - starts off with a very bitter almost resiny hops note quickly goes into a chocolate and toasted malt bite that remains through the rest of the beer. A slight coffee bitterness hits very late in the tasting with a warm alcohol feeling and finishes out with a sweet nutty caramel malt and light prune juice taste. Density is very thick and sugary with some chunks of yeast hanging around as you get to the bottom of the beer. Overall this brew has a fantastic maltiness typical in many English styles but with a very strong American hops presence that provides a great 1-2 combination containing many layers to delve into during your tasting. The taste is of soil, and it has a roasted character and a bitterness that totally overshadows any other tastes that the beer might have.Either these two bottles from fish and beer in copenhagen had gone bad in some way, or this brew is highly overrated.
