Lots of malts, with a slight hop astringency in the background. Some drying, roasted coconut, light chocolate macaroon. Some grassy notes too. Okay beer; not a brown ale fan.

Pours a very dark brown color body, smallish tan-whitish head, diminishing. Okay lacing. Strong sweet aroma, some spiciness and bitterness. Some smokiness. Some funkiness or something there in the nose. Watery body, some funkiness and smokiness. Slight chocolately. Old chalky chocolate taste. Some alcohol in the aftertaste. Some sourness too. A little odd. zach8270 (2121), Henrietta, New York, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 2, 2009 Small reminds me of sour red ales in a strange way, along with bbq sauce & malt. It has great fullness of palate for a beer of 4.5% & great depth of flavour. Lovely malt, slight caramel, then the finish dries out nicely with a bit of earthy goodness going on. Only slight whinge is the conditioning is slightly too intense, less bubbles & I think the flavours would show off even more
