Commercial Description:
This is our first edition of Dark Horizon. It is the first, for us anyway. There will be more to follow, and even though they will be other editions, they will still be firsts. “Let’s go crazy!” said Tore. The last time he said that, we created #100, which proved to be a success. How could I not agree to his suggestion? “How crazy can we be?” I responded. “Go all the way!” he answered. So we started off with a beefed up Imperial Stout, extra dark and extra bitter, not much to it really, but maybe a bit over the top. When this brew had fermented, we gathered again on a sunny Saturday morning, ready for next move. Half a ton of demerara sugars and our homemade extract of coffee were waiting for us. Standing there with sticky sugars all over the brewery and us, I just couldn’t resist asking Tore: “Don’t you have better things to do during week ends?” To this point he still hasn’t answered me. After adding a hefty volume of wine yeast, we left this brew to itself for month. A good month, that was.

This is ale; it is also a wine, and a coffee drink. We’ve been playful and brewed a hybrid. Do yourself and your friends a favour and share this bottle with those you deem worthy. Dark Horizon is indeed a global brew. Inspiration from the US Midwest, malt from England, bottles from Germany, name from Japan, sugars from Mauritius, hops from the Pacific rim, Yeast from Canada, coffee from Colombia, brewed in Grimstad, Norway.

All bottles of Dark Horizon are numbered with its unique number, and all together we launched 6000 of this brew.

37 P, 75 IBU, 16% ABV.

I don’t know what all the hype is about on this beer. big, soapy head. It is very sugary sweet. Alcohol is well-hidden by the sugar, but it is still very, very hot. Lots of chocolate, cocoa notes, yet an interesting wheatiness.

Bottle @ Ebenezer’s. Entirely black pour, zero head- incredible booze legs on the side of the glass. Aroma is absolutely gargantuan- tons of alcohol, molasses, vanilla, and caramel; the epitome of darkness. Flavor- all I can say is wow. Monstrous booze, sweet caramel, and some added roast notes. Palate is wondrous; sweet, full, and boozy. Unbelievable.

The blackest beer I’ve ever seen- jet black motor oil. Head is a thin tan veneer. Aroma is massively sweet and boozy. Huge molasses, brown sugar, booze, espresso, vanilla, milk chocolate, and burnt tar like dark sugars. Flavor is a sweet concoction of brown sugar molasses, coffee, chocolate, roast, vanilla, and massive warming booze. The depth in the sweet malt profile is unmatched, while the bitter roast profile is prolific. The palate is rich and syrupy with massive booze warmth and a chalk like roasty finish. Incredible- I’m actually speechless with a huge smile…

Huge, huge thanks to MrChopin for this one. Beautiful pour - very slow-forming mocha head on a glossy black. Aroma brings the world wide stout to mind - chocolate, rum, brown sugar, port wine, just a bit roasty. Sweet - it’s alcohol countering the malts here, not hops. So incredibly smooth - mellowed out to beautifully cover the huge ABV. A bit of molasses - this one is a dessert in a glass with a kick. Fantastic. (Side note from a friend: Combined with red wine it tastes remarkably like cola.)

Bottle. Pours pitch black and coats the glass with only a ring of light brown foam. Aroma is dates, prunes, plum, brandy, molasses, chocolate, and some alcohol. Flavor is slightly sweet with notes of mocha coffee and dark chocolate. slight burn as it goes down. Palate is thick and sticky with virtually no carbonation.

Bottle poured on Christmas Eve 2009, split with some family members. Beautiful pour -- nice dark brown head. Aroma is powerful -- soy sauce, lightly roasted coffee, chocolate. Suprisingly boozy at first, but that faded as it warmed up (or I just got used to the taste.) Very good, smooth, roasted malts and coffee dominate the taste. Impressed, but not totally blown away by this one. I like my impy’s a bit heavier... Still a great one, glad to have the chance to try it.

What a pleasant surprise. After having the bourbon soaked recent edition I was expecting something to smack me in the face but much to my surprise was this quite pleasant easy drinking smooth rendition of a highly drinkable stout with creamy chocolate desert like drink ability!

Pours black hinting on red on the edges. Short lasting dark brown film covers it. Aroma is port, alcohol, sweet dark chocolate and light coffee, vanilla. Taste is like a beer version of Kahlua. Heavy sweet and light bitter with a long alcoholic finish. Full bodied. Syrupy. Soft carbonation. Wonderful! (Tried sipping it also with a wonderful chocolate chip, cream, almond-bottom cognac soaked cake. Not the best match, though.) . Finally! Been hoping for a taste of this Gold medallist since I realized that as I had not been paying attention, it had been sold out from the Wine monopoly. (Bottle no.1544, courtesy of tarjei 12.12.2009)

Bottle. Thanks to Hogtownharry for this gem! A deep opaque black with a frothy mocha cap that leaves nice lace. In the nose I get muted coffee, dark chocolate, anise, vanilla, alcohol, burnt sugars and roasty malts. Tastes quite sweet, but is balanced with loads of hops. Very roasty, sweet dark chocolate, boozey like dark rum, black coffee, minty hops. This has mellowed nicely and was quite drinkable for the weight. Very good. Thanks Harry!
