kujo9 (1077), North Ridgeville, Ohio, USA Jan 11, 2008 16.9 oz bottle 12/27/08: Dark garnet reddish brown with a lasting, but thin tan head. Caramel and raisins are dominant up front. Brown sugar and some nutty and woody notes with a touch of alcohol as well. Toasty malt gets stronger as it warms with a bit of winey aroma. The initial flavor is toasty malt, raisiny fruit being strong, very caramel with a lightly hop flavored finish that is semi sweet. Toasty with a touch of roasty flavor in the aftertaste with some hints of molasses, as well as herbal hop. The aftertaste also dries out a bit and is a touch acidic. Smooth, well hidden alcohol, medium full body, and medium carbonation. This one is definitely worth some of the hype! Malty for the most part, but herbal hops balance to keep it from begin cloying, and has a very well thought out malt complexity. MrRain (415), O’Fallon, Illinois, USA Jan 10, 2008 1pt .9oz bottle poured in a trappist glass. This much anticipated beer pours black with nice cream-colored head. It has a great aroma of raisins and chocolate. The body is thick and chewy but it doesn’t cling to your mouth. It goes down quickly leaving a great after taste. The hops are there because this isn’t a malty beer but they don’t stand out. The chocolate malt is wonderfully balanced the rest of the beer. This is a great beer. Palidor19 (1750), Brandon, Florida, USA Jan 9, 2008 Quite tasty, the flavors of dark malts, caramel and toasty light piney hops. the feel seem to of all good for good drinking. nick76 (2636), Tampa, Florida, USA Jan 9, 2008 The aroma is hoppy with caramel and toasted malt.
