Commercial Description:
In the US this is called "Winter Ale".

A dark ale brewed specially for the Christmas season, with a rich, complex taste of caramel. This is a strong, dark and rather sweet Christmas Beer – just the way we think a Christmas beer should be.

Recommended serving temperature 12°C/53°F. Great with cheese or nuts. Ingredients: Lager, Munich, caramel, black, and chocolate malt; Chinook, Columbus, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

19°P, 30 IBU, 8.5 % ABV.

500cl - "Winter Ale" - Well I didn’t give this one enough time to settle down after my trip to the store so it gushed on me and I lost a good portion of it. Aroma is roasted chocolate malt, caramel and molasses followed by subtle hops and a touch of spice. Pours dark brown with a big brown head (see above) and good lacing. Flavor matches aroma. Palate is roasty and creamy. A unique and tasty brew.

bottled as Nøgne Ø Winter Ale in the U.S. absolutely wonderful... full of rich malty and caramel flavors... silky smooth body and character dominate the palate... slight bitter finish. pours a dark brown with little head. Nøgne Ø knows how to brew some beer - this is just another excellent example.

This bottled brew came courtesy of one of the distributors in Indianapolis, IN. It poured a small sized head of foamy medium to large sized mostly lasting brown colored bubbles. The head formed a fair lacing as it receded. The body was opaque black with no visible carbonation. The aroma contained notes of strong dark malt chocolate and some spices with a strange tar note. The mouth feel was thick and malty with a tingly hop finish. The dark malt and mild chocolate herb spice flavor was quite nice.

Bottle: Pours a dark brown with crimson accents. Large tan head. Aroma is deep and dark with roast, dark fruits, molasses, and a bit of smoke. Flavor is roasty with earthy tones and floral hops, a little smoke and a bit of grapes. Complex, yet simple and enjoyable.

Black pour with a huge fluffy tan head. Roasted malt aroma with hints of oak. Bitter to sweet. Lots of roasted coffee and spices. Full mouth feel with some soft carbonation. Very nice beer.

A large, frothy, tan head rests upon a cola-black body. Dense aroma is chock-full of sweet stuffs; chocolate, light roast coffee, raisins, dates brown sugar and red grapes. Some leather, pine and cedar fill in the remaining aromatic spaces. The flavour is mostly a direct translation of the aroma with a little more acidic sharpness than was indicated. But, overall, very much a big, lightly roasty, hoppy porter to my taste buds. Very rich, but with plenty of balance between hop and roast bitterness. Smooth texture, medium-full body and soft carbonation.

A very rich, dark brown beer with a persistent lacy off white head. Flavors of coffee, toasted malt, and roasted walnuts. This is a fine beer for the winter, with a smooth yet warming finish.

Creamy beige foam over a very dark beer. Nice dark roasted flavors. Rich and creamy.
