Commercial Description:
In the US this is called "Winter Ale".

A dark ale brewed specially for the Christmas season, with a rich, complex taste of caramel. This is a strong, dark and rather sweet Christmas Beer – just the way we think a Christmas beer should be.

Recommended serving temperature 12°C/53°F. Great with cheese or nuts. Ingredients: Lager, Munich, caramel, black, and chocolate malt; Chinook, Columbus, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

19°P, 30 IBU, 8.5 % ABV.

Bottle 0.5 l. Darkish brown, hazy with beige head. Roasted nose with some coffee and earthiness. American strong ale? Not how I know them. More like porter or imperial stout. Lacks complexity. For some reason I can’t pick much else than bitter roastiness, which is pretty up front. There is some coffee and chocolate there, but not as good and interesting as I’ve got to know Nognes, yet certainly not bad either. Pretty mouthfilling, with smooth carb.

American Strong? Hmm.....More like an imperial porter, but why start up that argument on Christmas. Pours a dark, earthy brown and has so much head I was afraid I was going to make an awful mess. Roasty notes and coffee dominate the nose, with a delicate sense of warm, winter spices in the background. The flavor is great. Just amazing. Lots of espresso and chocolate and just enough nutty sweetness/bitterness to make the finish spectacular. Full bodied and oily in my mouth. GREAT beer for Christmas day.

16.9 oz. brown bottle. No freshness date seen. Satisfying pfft opens bottle. Pours out a dark brown, opaque black color, with a sticky tan colored head. Aromas are of cola, raisins, chocolate. Flavors are of rum soaked raisins, cocoa truffles, Christmas fruitcake, some nuttiness also. Decent body, thick, rich mouthfeel, lively carbonation. Who knew the Vikings brewed such good beer?

Bottle from Capone’s. Pours dark brown with a small light brown head. Aroma of caramel and chocolate, slight spice. Taste is complex, chocolate comes through along with roasted malt, toffee, roasted nuts, chocolate and slight spice and hop bitterness on the finish. Solid beer.

Rich. Deep caramel tones. Doesn’t taste like most American Strongs. Instead, it has a bit of that Great Divide Hibernation strong ale taste. Very nice.

Very dark/black colour, lots of rasted, caramel, malty tastes, roasted, a complete christmas ale. Good but better with heavy food.
