unclemattie (2370), Georgia, USA Dec 10, 2007 "Winter Ale", 19 ºP, 30 IBU, 8%ABV. 22oz bottle. Pours opaque dark brown. Aroma of dark malts, chocolate. Nice chocolate flavors. Flavor is rich malt backbone. Very Balanced. LinusStick (1830), Moon Twp, suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 10, 2007 Nice American strong. Very Christmasy. Aroma of sweet caramel malt. Pour was a cloudy dark brown with a one finger tan head. Taste was very malty-mostly caramel malt and tasted a little like a chocolate malt milkshake. Could use a tad more carbonation, but all in all a very nice beer. SpringsLicker (2041), Tennessee, USA Dec 9, 2007 Dark brown, murky and light blocking. Huge persistent, three-dimensional head of light tan.
Rich caramel aroma, light date-nut bread.
Sweet and full bodied. A big, all malt show here.show here. xnoxhatex (1305), Grand Rapids/Chicago, Michigan, USA Dec 8, 2007 2007 bottle from WLV. Dark brown color with medium beige head. Wonderful roasty sweet malt aroma with bourbon-like notes such as vanilla and alc, also dark fruit and chocolate. Flavor is very roasty, dark fruit, yeast spiciness, medium sweet, very nice. Full body with creamy carbonation. One of the better winter seasonals. pantanap (1322), Chicago, Illinois, USA Dec 8, 2007 bottle.....pours a cloudy dark brown almost black with an off-white pour.....scents of dark fruit and chocolate malt with little to no roast....flavors of porter/stout some roasted malt, chocolate, dark fruit, the typical go-around. everything comes together in a nice package.... puzzl (2579), New York, New York, USA Dec 8, 2007 1 year old bottle. Strong winter spice, lightly lactic aroma. Big malts, very chewy and rich. Super-thick, perfect body, carbonation is dead on. Flavor has less spice than the flavor but is really balanced, and has combined well over the past year. Slight hints of booze. Beautifully aged. Gr0ve (1382), Oslo, Norway Dec 8, 2007 500 ml bottle. Dark brown with a hint of red. Medium-sized beige head. Rounded malty aroma with hints of chocolate and caramel. Full-bodied. Thick texture with lots of flavour. Caramel, rich malts, syrup and a bold hop flavour. Lots of hops indeed, but they balance the huge amounts of malts. This is an excellent brew. Perfectly balanced and with lots of character. This years version (2007) is even better than previous years. nearbeer (1833), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Dec 8, 2007 Updated: Oct 21, 2009500 ml, "God Jul" version. ("Winter Ale" version for 2009 update). Huge head fizzes out of the bottle on this opaque black beer; settles down and lasts well with some nice frosty lace. (Winter Ale version head was much more tame - even better!) Chocolate, evergreen, juniper, vanilla, orange-caramel and slight hickory on the nose. Front taste is spicy orange, cocoa, dark-roasted nuts and coffee balanced well by some earthy-spiced whiskey and toffee. Charred mesquite and bitter-grass herbs catch up and finish strong, leaving a cured tobacco, charred oak, whiskey and peanut aftertaste. Medium-heavy body is roasty dryish, and drinkably smooth with some light tingle. Super complex brew. God Jul indeed!
