Dough77 (771), Aurora, Illinois, USA Dec 2, 2007 Real dark brown pour with minimal white ring around the haed. Nose of cocoa, malt, barley with a touch of spice and smoke. Flavor brings out a heavy coffee and smoke flavor with a big chocolate malt presence. Complex enough, but just missing something. krysztofar (344), belleville, Illinois, USA Dec 2, 2007 500ml. this one exploded on me spouting dark brown foam all over my counter top. color is coal black. the head stands thick well formed and tall leaving solid lacing in its wake. interesting perfumed aroma, with caramel everywhere, in the taste odor, and texture. clean and sweet with a complex roasty finish. a very attractive and well crafted beer. unique with distinct characteristics. this shows american influence, but stands on its own. greenhorn1 (458), Mission Viejo, California, USA Dec 2, 2007 Bottle from BotteTrek.com. Pours dark like a stout. Aroma and flavor are similiar: chocolate and coffee. Mild sweet maltiness with a mild smoke taste. Slight bitter finish, medium mouthfeel. Rich and complex, but a little rough around the edges. Still one of my favorite brewers. AgentSteve (1334), SF Bay Area, California, USA Dec 1, 2007 Pours deep black with thin tan head. Wonderful nose of dark chocolate, vanilla and alcohol. Flavor is coffee, chocolate, and a touch of smoke. Very nice. aru (105), Smørum, Denmark Dec 1, 2007 Again a very very dark beer from Nøgne Ø. The huge amount of choclate malt gives it a very smokey taste, with not so many other notes. MikeF (528), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Dec 1, 2007 chocolaty slight fruity aroma. Deep black with a generous thick light tan head. velvety smooth flavor of chocolate malt and fruit. nicely balanced. finishes wet and slightly sweet. a very well balanced rich winter ale. JPDIPSO (4862), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA Nov 28, 2007 A mild gusher. So a few quick sips/slurps prior to getting to my glass. Very Dark brown, with little light passing through even at the edges. Tall, somewhat expected, head that is quite stable and has a light cocoa froth appearance. Decent lace. The bubbles look quite large at the base of the head, but are quite small when forming the lace. Dark chocolate, molasses and sorghum, dates, orange zest and a touch of peat in the aromas. LIghter feel with all the effervescence. With the pre sips and consequential sips this is a true winter ale. Lightly roasty with chocolate, dark caramel, cashews and heavy syrup. Some mild spice with a touch of mace and cardamom. A nice balance, easy drinking, stronger ale. SamGamgee (1394), Santa Cruz (La Selva), California, USA Nov 28, 2007 50cl bottle from systembolaget. After kicking myself for not getting any Nøgne Ø while in Oslo, I headed straight to systembolaget and picked up this as a consolation, even though with prices in Norway, its probably cheaper here. I’m still trying to get my head around that one. Well, its beautiful out of the bottle, with a near black body and huge lasting tan head with plenty of lace as i make my way through. My first impression is imperial stout, but the aroma reveals belgian qualities, with a little roast and not as much yeast, sweet brown sugar, some peat, and some floral hops. The flavor is thick and sweet, with some chocolate, alcohol, and a nice hop bitterness to finish it off. The body is full and silky, with a little stickiness in the finish. This is a really good beer; it reminds me of a Belgian strong crossed with an imperial stout. Unique and pleasant. Now I wish that I had gotten more Nøgne ø in Oslo!
