Commercial Description:
In the US this is called "Winter Ale".

A dark ale brewed specially for the Christmas season, with a rich, complex taste of caramel. This is a strong, dark and rather sweet Christmas Beer – just the way we think a Christmas beer should be.

Recommended serving temperature 12°C/53°F. Great with cheese or nuts. Ingredients: Lager, Munich, caramel, black, and chocolate malt; Chinook, Columbus, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

19°P, 30 IBU, 8.5 % ABV.

Aroma has heavy emphasis on caramel cake, with slight hints of chocolate and vanilla, attractive and promising, taste is a slight letdown thinner then I would expect, caramel soft tones with some toffee and vanilla and a chocolate bitter finish. Still an excellent brew, thanks again Kingpin

500 ml bottle from Cellars Wine and Spirits on Larpenteur, Roseville MN (June 2007), drunk at cellar temperature from a Chouffe tulip. A huge, lasting caramel-crème head tops the darkly translucent molasses body, lacing thickly as it gently drops….spicy-bready aroma, wonderfully “Christmasy” with caramel, molasses and hints of nutmeg, dark bready yeast….the body is very full, moderately sweet, rather yeasty, very Belgian dubbel-esque with bready, caramelly malt characteristics, little in the way of hops, a hint of orangepeel….lightly tart towards the finish, low to moderate carbonation; this is excellent.

500 ml bottle (Winter Ale). Very dark brown, ruby tinted beer with a thick and very persistent tan head. Quite sticky. Sweet molasses and toffee with a heavy toasted hazelnut and almond character as well. A touch of licorice and milk chocolate. Soft leathery character through the middle. The flavour is great, sweet rich chocolate, toasted nuts and leather. A lot of milky/lactic sweetness up front that serves as a counterpoint to the leathery dryness. Lots of dark malts, fairly complex and well-balanced. Sort of a cross between sweet stout and strong ale. Very creamy palate. A bit of smoke and oatmealy richness. Lovely beer.

(Bottle 50 cl) Vintage 2004. Pours a hazy, dark brown with a small, beige head that dissipates in no time. Aroma of dried fruit and vintage port. Quite full-bodied, a little low in carbonation with sweetish, roasted malt, dried and overripe fruit, vanilla and port accents and a whiff of coffee. Dry, lightly hoppy finish. Excellent - this really has aged gracefully. 240907

(12oz bottle) Sampled at the Post-Great Canadian Beer Festival 2007 in Victoria on September 8th, 2007. From a trade with Ungsmash. Strong cocoa, coffee. Licorice and soy flavour with a malty base. Short finish. Interesting.

Somehow, I think I would’ve enjoyed it even more as "God Jul". Anyway, Dark brown, with a big brown head. Some notes of milk chocolate, some mellow herbal notes. Surprisingly clean finish. Very tasty.
