Oakes (8058), gone rambling, Vietnam Sep 15, 2007 Very dark brown. Nice nose - chocolate, toffee, smoked plum. The flavour is full, toffeeish, slightly smoky. Bitter finish. One of the best Nognes I’ve had. presario (2953), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Sep 11, 2007 Bottle shared at CapFlu’s tasting after GCBF. Very dark brown. Thin brownish cream head. Licorice and alcohol nose. Flavour of alcohol, chocolate and licorice. pantani (1894), Salinas, California, USA Sep 11, 2007 Black with a brown edge, no head.

Arayaga2 (933), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 7, 2007 Updated: Aug 28, 2009Coca Cola appearance with thin brown head. Aroma is roasty with a hint of caramel covered beef jerky. Taste is same with greater emphasis on roasty. Carbonation is fine and brisk. Not what I expected, but it’s not bad, either. $8/500ml egajdzis (3602), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 3, 2007 Poured a dark chestnut color with a medium sized tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of chocolate, caramel malts, nuts, and light citrus. Taste of more chocolate, roasted malts, nuts, caramel, and vanilla. Low bitterness, with low alcohol apparency. Very nice, I wish more brewers would make non-spiced winter ales! kp (8400), Woodstock, Georgia, USA Sep 1, 2007 Updated: Feb 24, 2008Name: Winter Ale

robertjm (399), El Cerrito, California, USA Aug 30, 2007 Bought at Ledger’s Liquors, in Berkeley, CA. Pours nice tan head which lasts for quite some time. Microfine carbonation that’s visible but not overpowering. No aroma to speak of. Flavors leaning towards the roasted malts. Not especially hoppy. Nice drinking beer, but a bit on the expensive side for us here in Calif. PhillyBeer2112 (2084), Orange Park, Florida, USA Aug 27, 2007 Ha! I guessed it would be classed under American Strong Ale at first whiff, and I was right! Hooray for me! Duh. Anyway, big complex aroma that features quite a bit of malt and hops, Chocolate, nuts (toasted almonds, pecan pie), some roasted malt, and resiny grapefruit hops that are a touch sweaty. I like how they are definitely present but do not overpower the rich malt aromas. Creamy smooth palate, with a roasted chocolately nutty flavor, with only mild sweetness balanced by a mild resiny hop component at the edges, all leading into a semi-dry smoky, ashy finish. Wonderful. Dark reddish brown appearance, thin head.
