pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Aug 8, 2007 Dark dark brown with a with a thin dense tan greyish head. The nose is very much in line with a stout or strong porter. Big chocolate and caramel malt. A bit of roast. Some small hint of spice seems to come in. A bit of bubblegum. A bit creamy on the palate with some decent body and relatively subdued carbonation. Sweet caramel and chocolate malt is joined by a stronger roast, spice and slight hop character. A bit of alcohol. A relatively dry bit toasty roasty finish. Really pretty nice. beerbill (1919), Laurel, New York, USA Aug 7, 2007 16.9 oz. bottle. Pours a very dark brown, not quite black, with a thick, luscious, tan head that lasted to the bottom of the glass and left light sheets of lace. Very nice aroma of caramel, raisins and bitter chocolate. Not quite as flavorful as the aroma would inidiate, but still pleasant with notes of caramel, bitter chocolate and alcohol. Moderate bitterness and warming at the finish. Medium bodied. I’d like to try this again around the Holidays instead of August! jimhilt (1664), Bow, New Hampshire, USA Jul 22, 2007 Pours a three finger thick brown head that fades slowly leaving some lace. Totally black color. Light carbonation and medium-heavy bodied. Roasted coffee nose. Flavor is roasted chocolate, some sweetness but a baker’s chocolate finish. The high ABV is hidden. I wouldn’t call this a Strong Ale, more like a porter on steroids. $7.00 for a 22oz bottle from Tully’s Beer and Wine Wells, ME. redlight (1445), Winter Park, Florida, USA Jul 10, 2007 Rich chocolate and coffee aroma, dark malts and roasted barley. Pour very dark brown almost black, with a tan head. Strong hop flavor which surprises me, molasses, chocolate malts, sweet, with hints of pine resin from the hops. Pretty good winter beer! Even though i’m in florida and its over 90 degrees. shigadeyo (2210), Harrison, Ohio, USA Jul 10, 2007 Updated: Jul 25, 2009 6/24/2007 and 11/07/2007: Nøgne Ø Winter Ale has an opaque dark chesnut brown color. There is some sediment suspended in it after the pour. It looks pretty thick! It also has a creamy tan-colored head. The aroma is creamy and has some light chocolate, smoke, and nutty notes to it. The flavor is creamy with roasted malt, dark chocolate, dark caramelized fruits, coffee, and a hint of tobacco. This beer is strong in flavor and the alcohol seems reserved. The finish is dry and has a great dark chocolate flavor. The body of this beer is medium and it has a smooth and creamy texture. Perfect for the style. This is a great Winter Ale and it is probably my second favorit of the Nøgne Ø beers (behind the Porter) so far. I really hope that this beer makes it to Southwest Ohio this coming Winter!

hellomynameis (794), Mayer, Minnesota, USA Jul 7, 2007 This was quite possibly my favorite christmas beer. Brown color with a tan head. Some sweetness of chocolate and caramel, a bit of fruit and a bit of spice. Quite a bit going on here, great mouth-feel with chocolate, lots of malts - roasted, chocolate - some caramel and toffee. Interesting and complex. theisti (1640), Leawood, Kansas, USA Jul 5, 2007 1 pt .9 fl oz bottle from Blue Max in Burnsville, MN. Pour is a deep brown with some redness. 1/2 inch khaki head goes away pretty quickly. Aroma is caramel and some raisin sweetness. Also a bit of smokiness in there as well. Taste is roasty - smoky malt. A bit of nice hop bitterness at the finish and a touch of sweetness (almost more cherries in the taste) throughout. A nice, interesting brew. ogglethorp (882), Ohio, USA Jul 3, 2007 Bottle via trade with The Epeeist, thanks Chris! Pours a dark ruby/mahogony color eith a smallish tan colored head. Aroma is fruity, caramel, soem chocolate. Flavor is is dried fruit, sweet fruit, rasins, figs, caramel, toffee, coffee, chocolate.
