Egon (392), Gothenburg, Sweden May 1, 2007 Bottle. Very dark brown, almost black, with a whitish head. The aroma has some of chocolate, coffee and nuts, a bit roasty also. Medium body and I dont notice that much alcohol in it for being that strong. Smooth finish SamuraiArtist (292), portland, Oregon, USA Apr 30, 2007 Bottle: Pours a very dark brown going on black. 1 finger tan head. Aroma of chocolate, nuts and carmel. Flavor is creamy and milky with a chocolate and a little nut flavor making. Barely any roasty bitterness, actually no real bitterness at all from hops of otherwise. Its smooth and has a good flavor but just doesnt have enough bite for me to really like it. Sorta like a hot chocolate. JK (2944), Richfield, Minnesota, USA Apr 28, 2007 Very malty, kind of a scotch ale but not quite thick enough for that. Considerable alcohol, very light smoke and earth. Some dark fruits and medium sweet malt. Skyview (3985), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA Apr 28, 2007 From a 500 ml bottle, this was the third beer sampled at Cellar’s Nøgne Ø on Friday. Pours a heavy dark brown brew with a tan head. Dissolves fast and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma has tones of yeast, vegetables, caramel, roasted malt and some licorice. Taste is bitter with some white flour, roasted grain and a little extra carbonation. Pleasant and smooth finish. kkearn (993), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 26, 2007 Bottle; "winter ale". Deep brown, with a thick tan head. Roasted malt aroma. Roasted chocolate malt up front with notes of caramel. Piney hop flavor is weak at first, but builds towards the finish. Long, well balanced finish. Pigfoot (2226), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Apr 25, 2007 Darkest coloration, nearly black, with a nice, active toasted tan head. Looks really good!
Aroma is slightly sweet, black, chocolate malt at work, subdued cocoa feel, whispers of spice, anise, etc, but quiet, mellow...
A smooth, dusky affair once in the mouth, thick, rich, roasty. A bit smokey. Hints of caramel, but not as much as the label promises, this is a darker, richer character than that. So beefy, I’d stick it in the stout category. Very supple mouthfeel, big time flavor, huge body, quite tasty.
Not sure I’d pop $5 a bottle for it too often though...but I was happy to try it out!
HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Apr 23, 2007 Bottle (500ml). As "Nøgne Winter Ale". Opaque deep reddish brown, solid lasting plug of tan foamy head (4.5 but hey why not 5?). Deep almost burnt roast grainy malt, heavy overtones of currants, raisins, figs, increasing alcohol, dark baker’s chocalate and molasses. The taste is THICK, bitter chocolate, burnt malt, background of tart fruit (more like cherry), the alcohol isn’t really detectable in the miasma of roast and bitterness. Thick, chewy body, almost viscous, mild carbonation, pretty intense bitter chocolate and syrupy malt - I’d call this a reduced stout, but whatever, another fantastic beer from this brewery - t’umbs up, baize!! blankboy (3156), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Apr 22, 2007 Bottle, labeled ’Winter Ale’. Pours a very dark brown, practically black, with a large mostly-lasting tan head -- nice! Slightly mild aroma of caramel malt, a little roasty, with chocolate, some sweetness and a hint of alcohol. Flavour of caramel malt, nuts, chocolate and a good amount of hops. Tastes better and better the further you get through it and it warms. Alcohol’s well hidden. Medium bodied. What a great beer, Nogne haven’t disappointed me yet.
