Commercial Description:
In the US this is called "Winter Ale".

A dark ale brewed specially for the Christmas season, with a rich, complex taste of caramel. This is a strong, dark and rather sweet Christmas Beer – just the way we think a Christmas beer should be.

Recommended serving temperature 12°C/53°F. Great with cheese or nuts. Ingredients: Lager, Munich, caramel, black, and chocolate malt; Chinook, Columbus, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

19°P, 30 IBU, 8.5 % ABV.

Deep cherry-mahogany body with a thin, silky tan head that fades. Abundant caramelization in the aroma with strong Munich malt signatures, sweet peated earthy tones, bready yeast, and a note of chocolate. Dark fruit flavors with sweet and bitter cherry skin qualities, plus an element of coffee. Slight impression of oxidation. Richly sweet and malty overall, with latent bitterness. Velvety texture. A sweet, slow, and decadent winter warmer, but a little too much sticky unattenuated malt for me to truly love. Should be listed as an English Strong Ale.

Bottle from Capone’s. Onyx pour with 2-finger, creamy tan head and floaties. Marvelous appearance. Aroma of Roasty dark malt, chocoff, nutmeg, molasses. Tastes roasty chocolate malty, with a big chocoff and molasses hit coupled with cinnamon, nutmeg, and sprucy finishing hops. Thich, rich, complex mouthfeel. This one is one of the better Christmas beers I have quaffed, and I recommend it to anyone.

500ml bottle "Winter Ale." Poured a dark brown to black with a cascading creamy light brown head. Sheets of lacing. Chocolate and dark roast coffee aroma, with some earthy and minerally notes and a trace of licorice or prune. Flavor of bittersweet chocolate and a great dark roasted maltiness which borders on but does not cross into that burnt leaf character. Smooth and rich mouthfeel. Going great with the roasted almonds I’m snacking on. A bit too pricey here however at $7 per 500ml, especially when several less expensive domestic Impy stouts are equal if not better in drinking pleasure and nut/cheese pairing.

thanks to sersdf for hanging on to this so i could get my 71st style--an ale--which was wrongfully taken from me, and now it proves evasive again due to recategorizing. not a whole lot of aroma. Smells like some type of spice ale. aroma and flavor is that burnt rubber/pine. definitely more of an english strong ale despite the fact that it’s neither british or american. overall, not very good.

pours very dark. smells spiced. doesn’t taste particularly good. this needs to reclassified back to an ale so i can have all the styles. it’s kinda got a burnt malty taste. a bit thin. didn’t like it at first but after a little while, it’s pretty solid. totally hides the alcohol.

Bottle poured a brown with full head. Nose was chocolate, much more then I expected. Taste had some lactose, more like a stout/porter to me. Loved this baby, no presence of %. Lactose in here, as well.

(Bottle) Pours a dark brown body with a small creamy tan head. Aroma of chocolate, roastiness, and milk. Flavor of roasted malt and dark chocolate with a smooth, creamy, wonderful mouthfeel.

Bottle. Deep brown color, full foam. Very mild aroma, a hint of dark malt and weedy, herbaceous hops. Flavor is very interesting and complex and I can see why others like it, but I just don’t enjoy the profile. It has a lot of hints herbal tea, resinous hops and light malt components. Doesn’t seem very together. However, I had their Imperial Stout a couple days ago. Top notch stuff.
