Nov 25, 2007 Bottle from Sam’s, Durham. Dark pour with a lively body and modest head. Aroma of strong caramel/chocolate malts and a touch of spice. There’s a bit of a burn and a bit too much heat, giving what might ordinarily be a complex spiced beer a bit of a dull personality, or at least duller than one might hope. Certainly enjoyable but, given the pricing, not something I’d eagerly seek again.

Jan 4, 2007 [bottle] Dark brown with a rich and creamy head. Sweet, hoppy, malty and somewhat smoked aroma. Flavour is dry and roasty. Very flavourful , hoppy and complex yet smooth and balanced.

Sep 4, 2008 Bottle @ at home. Pours a very dark brown with a beige head. Smells of clove and alcohol. Sweet with aromas of alcohol and cloves. As it ages in the glass you notice aromas of hard roasted malts and tiny ashy hints. Medium to full bodied. Medium carbonation. Dry finish with somer clover and a hint of alcohol.

Mar 15, 2007 Deep brown, thin tan head, slight red in the body. Nose is cocoa, cherries, toffee, a slight hint of dark fruit, restrained hops & alcohol. Flavor is cocoa, toffee, slight burnt fruits. Strong bitterness surfaces for a moment then fruit alcohol. Very nice body and a chocolate finish.

Nov 11, 2007 Updated: Dec 13, 200750 cl bottle, batch#300, 2007. Dark brown color, brown head. Sweet roasted malt, caramel, chocolate, fruit. Complex, balanced and one of the great x-mas beers. Re-rate: From cask at Cardinal in Stavanger, 12.12.07. Very hazy, but fantastic aroma and flavor. Heaven!

Jul 11, 2006 Bottle, batch 175, shared by Jason. Very dark brown body, small tan head. Coffee, tart plum, tootsie roll chocolate in the compelling aroma. Seems like a cross between a dry stout, brown ale, and a Belgian. Malty toffee, chocolate, and an odd banana/peach/pear fruit element. Odd flavor but it doesn’t draw me it - maybe it’s the chocolatey sweetness w/o the balancing roast.

Dec 14, 2008 Bottle. Dark brown body with a tan thick head. Malty aroma with spicy notes. Chocolate and nuts is there as well. Flavour is chocolate, spices, dark fruit and hops. Its smooth and very well balanced.
