Commercial Description:
In the US this is called "Winter Ale".

A dark ale brewed specially for the Christmas season, with a rich, complex taste of caramel. This is a strong, dark and rather sweet Christmas Beer – just the way we think a Christmas beer should be.

Recommended serving temperature 12°C/53°F. Great with cheese or nuts. Ingredients: Lager, Munich, caramel, black, and chocolate malt; Chinook, Columbus, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

19°P, 30 IBU, 8.5 % ABV.

(on bottle 2004 edit. thx Sigmund thx alot) My favorite among the Nøgne Ø so far, still has about 6 or 8 bottles from Sigmund. Grand X-mas brew here. I could go on in praising it, but I´ll just say: this is a perfect balanced ale, in all aspects; brewing in the making.

Dark brown with frothy tan head. Aroma of caramel, brown sugar, toasted malts, spice and smoke. Taste of smoked malts, chocolate and caramel. Rich taste with the alcohol slightly noticeable. Pretty solid brew.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a thick light tan head. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, slight roasted malt, and chocolate. Flavor of roasted malts, some vegetal notes. Kinda bland actually. Just not a very enjoyable beer. These winter ales just do not seem to be put together very well.

Batch 96 - 2004. Deep brown/red - almost black. Brownish head that soon disppears. Lot of taste: Fruity, a bit spicy leaving a good, roasted malty aftertaste - that lasts. And the sedimentation: It’s mud - nicly clinging to the bottom. KI=6

(Bottle on 2008-02-03) Very dark. Roasted malts and spices in nose. Spices in taste along with roasted malts. Pleasant but perhaps a bit too spicy.

[07 Bottle I assume, as its been sitting on the shelf at Sam’s this entire year] Pours a thicker dark deep brown with a small tan froth. Aroma is lightly tart, green apple, juicy, some roasted coffee and a touch of oats. First taste is dry, tasty dark chocolate, black malt adds that ’oat’ like creaminess I could smell, very light hint of caramel malt, the hops are pretty faded but add just a smidgen of spice. Ingredients blend flawlessly to create a unique flavor. Not nearly as plasticy as some of their other ’malt concoctions.’ This is a great PORTER.... lovely roast and chocolate. Very clean roast finish. Medium/full body with medium sized softer carbonation, balanced mouthful. I’m glad after staring at this on the shelf for almost a year I decided to pick it up.

Creamy beige foam over a very dark beer. Nice dark roasted flavors. Rich and creamy.

Bottle @ RBESG2005. Some roastyness in the nose, quite spicy. Very dark brown body, small tan head. Fruity flavor, richly spiced, mainly cinnamon and likewise.
