Commercial Description:
In the US this is called "Winter Ale".

A dark ale brewed specially for the Christmas season, with a rich, complex taste of caramel. This is a strong, dark and rather sweet Christmas Beer – just the way we think a Christmas beer should be.

Recommended serving temperature 12°C/53°F. Great with cheese or nuts. Ingredients: Lager, Munich, caramel, black, and chocolate malt; Chinook, Columbus, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

19°P, 30 IBU, 8.5 % ABV.

Pours a deep brown with a fluffy light brown head. Aroma of caramel, chocolate, malt and licorice. Flavor is licorice, chocolate, malt, caramel, spices. Hides alcohol rather well. Decent beer but not worth the price tag.

Bottle from Port Carlsbad bottle shop: Started foaming over as soon as I poped the cap. Jet black with an initial medium, but fast fadeing light brown head. Aroma is dark chocolate with a hint of licorice. Flavor starts black coffee followed by dark chocolate, licorice and nuts with a light dry, lightly hoppy finish. Medium body is rich and creamy with moderate-lively carbonation.

Dark brown medium almond head. Very nutty taste, lots of crystal malts, balanced with roasted and chocolate malts with grassy hops in the finish. Pretty weak beer actually not a lot going on, doesn’t taste bad just not awesome.

Bottle split with Dallas. Pours a dark brown, practically black with small off-white lacing. The aroma is sweet cinnamon, fruity, and slight chocolate roast. Taste is chocolate malt, spicy mouthfeel with notes of chocolate and caramel.

Pours dark brown with ruby highlights and a small tan head that fades to a small ring. The aroma is loaded with sweet fresh malt, licorice, and a hint of nuts and chocolate. Taste is of sweet malt and licorice with a well balanced bitterness and a nutty aftertaste. Full mouthfeel but not to thick with the alcohol being well hidden. Another great beer from Nøgne.

Mostly opaque brown with a medium head. Fair lacing. Aroma of chocolate malts, earth hops. Tastes of chocolate, liquorice and dark fruits. Bitter finish. Medium to full body. This is my first ’ale’ style, so I didn’t know what to expect. But it seems a lot like a porter or stout.

Dark brown to black with tanned lacing head. Burned malty aroma with salty liquorice and citric spices. Flavor is burned malts, liquorice, slight chocolate, coffee and quite strong spices. Smoothly bitter coffeeish finish. Medium to full bodied, smooth palate. Viciously burned and spicy but still extremely drinkable.
