Commercial Description:
In the US this is called "Winter Ale".

A dark ale brewed specially for the Christmas season, with a rich, complex taste of caramel. This is a strong, dark and rather sweet Christmas Beer – just the way we think a Christmas beer should be.

Recommended serving temperature 12°C/53°F. Great with cheese or nuts. Ingredients: Lager, Munich, caramel, black, and chocolate malt; Chinook, Columbus, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

19°P, 30 IBU, 8.5 % ABV.

2007 bottle from WLV. Dark brown color with medium beige head. Wonderful roasty sweet malt aroma with bourbon-like notes such as vanilla and alc, also dark fruit and chocolate. Flavor is very roasty, dark fruit, yeast spiciness, medium sweet, very nice. Full body with creamy carbonation. One of the better winter seasonals.

Batch 175 (2005). Very nice indeed. Dark with lots of licorice and chocolate. subdued hops, but very close to the perfect winter warmer/old ale. A bit short finish.

500ml bottle from the Systembolaget. This was the highlight of one of many Christmas dinners. Pours a deep russet brown with a tan head, throwing up a puff of liqourice, chocolate, coffee and cigar box. These smells carry over to the flavour, with pronounced coffee and tobacco notes following a short sweet raisin burst on the tongue tip. Balanced bitterness and a slightly jammy mouthfeel - like a roubust Bordeaux wine. Keeping a few of these till next Christmas. Something to look forward too!

American bottle labeled as "Winter Ale". Dark borwn almost black colour with a small brown head. Big aroma of coffee, sweet candied fruits, molasses and hops in the background. Very creamy mouthfeel. Flavour has more coffee, some dark chocolate and nice finish with a touch of bitterness. Very well done.

Roasted malt, honts of cold coffee, maybe tiramisu aroma. Very dark, almost black (reddish brown against the light) beer with nice lon g stying creamy foam cap. Strong roasted malt, hints of dark coca brewed in water, hops bring heather like bitterness that emphasizes the hints of bitter chocolate (of Marabou). Palate is little viscose, not really oily and it lingers long on the root of the tongue. Excellent season beer from this Norwegian brewery. Try also the other beers of this brewery. they really put some love into their beer brewing!

Very dark beer with nice medium milk-coffee brown head and lot of yeast. Aroma is wonderful: malts, roast malts, hops and fruits. Beautiful, very smooth palate with medium carbonation makes this balanced and not too sweetish. Fruitness in the aroma and flavour makes this kind of beers more interesting and that is bonus for this God Jul.

Bottle from Sam’s Quik Shop in Durham, NC. Gusher alert! Very dark pour with a medium head and decent retention. Deep aroma with notes of chocolate, toffee and rum soaked fruit. Very complex taste. Roasted malt aroma with caramel, chocolate, rye, hop bitterness, port and a little bit of smoke. Definitely on the shopping list next time I get down to NC!
