Feb 20, 2009 Poured from a 500ml bottle labeled as Winter Ale and served in a snifter. This beer poured muddy dark brown with some caramel highlights and a thick, lasting cap of tan foam. Excellent lacing. Looks delicious sitting in the snifter. The aroma consisted of cocoa, raisins, plums, and some light hoppy citrus notes. The flavor was rich and malty and included caramel, chocolate, pine, oranges, and also some dark fruits. Tons of flavor going on here. Layered and complex. The mouthfeel was full-bodied and had a moderate amount of aggressive carbonation. Malty and full of American hops. A well executed winter warmer.

Nov 30, 2008 pours a jet foamy black with a medium size foamy khaki head, some lacing too.
smell is of dark fruit, cocoa, spice, and a whiff of caramel.
taste is smooth, chocolate, some spice, coffee, some caramel, a little licorice, sweetness is hiding in the back.
overall very stoutish

Dec 1, 2007 Pours deep black with thin tan head. Wonderful nose of dark chocolate, vanilla and alcohol. Flavor is coffee, chocolate, and a touch of smoke. Very nice.

Mar 15, 2008 Bottle. Pours an amazing dark chocolate color with a thick creamy brown head. A great appearance. The aroma is light; some roasted caramel malt. The taste is dominated by a creamy chocolate and smooth roasted malt. Some spices and a bit of hops finish it out. A bit of Belgian yeast in there perhaps also. I really enjoyed this beer.

Oct 28, 2008 Bottle, named Winter Ale, thanks to WeeHeavySD for sharing. Pours a clear, dark amber-brown with a tan ring. Rich, sweet and sharp aroma, of toasted malt and alcohol. Sweet, crisp taste, of toasted malt and molasses, with a hint of bitterness and wood. Lingering sweet toast flavors. Very tasty.

Aug 13, 2009 A dark brown, almost black colored beer. It has a thick foamy beige head. The aroma of dark malts, chocolate with coffee. There are dark fruits. The taste of smoked malt with chocolate, some coffee with fruits. It is nice bitter. Some spices with notes of alcohol. The aftertaste is dark bitter with hints of sweet.

May 29, 2009 Pours almost black with a smallish, dissipating head. Aroma is atypical of an ASA, more like a porter; coffee, cream, chocolate, caramel- lots of malt, not much hop present. Tastes much like a porter, but slightly more fruitiness and alcohol, and not as overwhelming with the caramel aspect. Palate is very smooth ,very well done. Very good beer.

May 4, 2008 Dark brown to black with tanned lacing head. Burned malty aroma with salty liquorice and citric spices. Flavor is burned malts, liquorice, slight chocolate, coffee and quite strong spices. Smoothly bitter coffeeish finish. Medium to full bodied, smooth palate. Viciously burned and spicy but still extremely drinkable.
