Commercial Description:
In the US this is called "Winter Ale".

A dark ale brewed specially for the Christmas season, with a rich, complex taste of caramel. This is a strong, dark and rather sweet Christmas Beer – just the way we think a Christmas beer should be.

Recommended serving temperature 12°C/53°F. Great with cheese or nuts. Ingredients: Lager, Munich, caramel, black, and chocolate malt; Chinook, Columbus, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

19°P, 30 IBU, 8.5 % ABV.

Bottle: Dark ruby color, maybe black, tan head, light lacing. Nose of grape, smoke, licorice, dry rice, some cherry or apricot. The flavor is very smoky and briney with vegetal notes and plenty of hops....vegetal hops. Roasty, spicy, hoppy. Finishes with a large intense body. Good combination int he end.

A large, frothy, tan head rests upon a cola-black body. Dense aroma is chock-full of sweet stuffs; chocolate, light roast coffee, raisins, dates brown sugar and red grapes. Some leather, pine and cedar fill in the remaining aromatic spaces. The flavour is mostly a direct translation of the aroma with a little more acidic sharpness than was indicated. But, overall, very much a big, lightly roasty, hoppy porter to my taste buds. Very rich, but with plenty of balance between hop and roast bitterness. Smooth texture, medium-full body and soft carbonation.

Bottle; "winter ale". Deep brown, with a thick tan head. Roasted malt aroma. Roasted chocolate malt up front with notes of caramel. Piney hop flavor is weak at first, but builds towards the finish. Long, well balanced finish.

This was quite possibly my favorite christmas beer. Brown color with a tan head. Some sweetness of chocolate and caramel, a bit of fruit and a bit of spice. Quite a bit going on here, great mouth-feel with chocolate, lots of malts - roasted, chocolate - some caramel and toffee. Interesting and complex.

Bottle from River’s Bend. Poured dark brown color with an average fizzy brown head that lasted and produced good lacing. Heavy complex toasted nutty malt and alcohol aroma. Medium to full body with a sticky texture. Heavy balanced nutty bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of long duration. This is a standout beer.

Bottle from Capone’s. Pours dark brown with a small light brown head. Aroma of caramel and chocolate, slight spice. Taste is complex, chocolate comes through along with roasted malt, toffee, roasted nuts, chocolate and slight spice and hop bitterness on the finish. Solid beer.
