Commercial Description:
In the US this is called "Winter Ale".

A dark ale brewed specially for the Christmas season, with a rich, complex taste of caramel. This is a strong, dark and rather sweet Christmas Beer – just the way we think a Christmas beer should be.

Recommended serving temperature 12°C/53°F. Great with cheese or nuts. Ingredients: Lager, Munich, caramel, black, and chocolate malt; Chinook, Columbus, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

19°P, 30 IBU, 8.5 % ABV.

Dark brown, murky and light blocking. Huge persistent, three-dimensional head of light tan. Rich caramel aroma, light date-nut bread. Sweet and full bodied. A big, all malt show here.show here.

bottled as winter ale. tall rocky dark tan head. body is blackish chestnut, opaque, and lighter brown at edges. aroma is roasted malt, roasted brazil nuts, and licorice. flavor is roasted licorice malt, some chocolate malt and faint dried fig. yes this tastes like a baltic porter, quite different than a typical winter ale but that’s ok. bitter roasty finish.

1pt .9oz bottle labeled Winter Ale. Poured a dark/deep reddish-brown color with a larged sized tan head. Aromas of bread, roast, chocolate, and I’m getting some spiciness. Tastes of roast, chocolate, dark fruits, caramel, and a trace of brown sugar. Alcohol well hidden. Interesting. When I dumped the last of the bottle in my glass, in came a bunch of large chunky floaters (or should I call them sinkers).

Raters are placing votes for the style, so I’ll cast mine for a sweet stout, albeit with fruity notes. Not important. What it is is a darned fine ale, pouring a deep, dark brown body with a respectable cocoa head. It’s got a pleasing multi-level aroma, beginning with roasted malts and dark caramel, then some dark berries, a drop or two of alcohol, and a bit of anise. The flavor is roasty and has a touch of smoke. The berries are neatly rolled in for support along with a dollop of milk chocolate and a chaw of licorice. Very smooth drinking. Whatever it may be, it’s a fine Winter warmer.

16.9oz bottle about 1 yr old. Served in a Bells Snifter. Nose is roast, caramel, molasses and herbal and fruity hops. Thick mouthfeel. Smooth taste of milk chocolate, mocha, nice fruitiness, and piney hops. Something gives this beer quite a rush in the end, I thought it was the hop bitterness initially, but it could be the roasted malt and high alcohol combo. 7/4/7/4/15 god jul

Coca Cola appearance with thin brown head. Aroma is roasty with a hint of caramel covered beef jerky. Taste is same with greater emphasis on roasty. Carbonation is fine and brisk. Not what I expected, but it’s not bad, either. $8/500ml

[Bottle from oh6gdx, cheers!] I was sure I had rated this, but apprently not, hurrah! Pours dark with a thick, tan head. Aroma is spicey (cloves) and chocolatey, roasty notes and a faint touch of smoke. Full, soft body with a dry, spicey, chocolate finish. 8.5% very well concealed.
